  1. That would be great. Thanks!
  2. Darn it! I guess I will have to wait until Monday to find out. My mail just got here, but no letter. Does anyone know what the cut off is? Congratulations to those of you that go in! :yelclap:
  3. Hmmm. I was afraid his info was unreliable. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
  4. A guy in my A&P II class attended the most recent nursing info session at El Centro (on Monday, I think). They were told the highest GPA for the Spring 06 applicants was 3.77!!! They were also told that out of 500+ taking the NET, only about 238 were eligible to apply! I have been so excited since he told me this, but I was hesitant to share just in case he was given the wrong info. I can't keep it to myself any longer. I just hope it's true. I had prepared myself for bad news, thinking a 3.77 with 6 hours of support classes would not be good enough. Now I am quite hopeful. Good luck everyone!!
  5. I'm still here too! I guess the big question is, will it be Saturday or Monday when we find out? Those of you with morning mail delivery have an obligation to the rest of us to let us know the moment you hear anything! :chuckle
  6. Dutchgirl, I just now saw your post and can totally relate. Your son-in-law sounds a lot like my ex-husband. I moved in with my parents when I was 23 years old and 5 months pregnant, while my husband, age 35, went away to rehab for coke/crack addiction. Gary didn't finish the program because he wanted to be with me for our son's birth, but it wouldn't have made a difference if he had. My son was 2 ½ months old when I kicked Gary out for good. Before my son was born I was willing to put up with a lot, but I was not willing to subject my child to the lifestyle I had been subjected to since Gary and I had been together. I got full custody of our son, of course, and Gary got supervised visitation. For the next 10 years Gary was either in rehab, transitional housing, or homeless. Two years ago he finally cleaned up for real. I am happy to say he has completely turned his life around, but it was a long time coming. Many years were wasted, and although my son always knew his dad, they didn't build a solid relationship. They spend every Sunday together now. I think the relationship is still strained, but not bad. My son usually looks forward to the time with his dad, but is glad when it is over too. You did the right thing by making your son-in-law leave. There is nothing you or your daughter can do to "rescue" him. He may actually mean the things he says, but he is incapable of following through right now. Your daughter should plan a life for herself and her child without this man. He may straighten up, but even if he does it may take 10 years. She can't wait for him. Perhaps when the baby arrives she'll realize what she needs to do. Babies have a way of helping us put our priorities in their proper order. She's very lucky to have such an understanding and supportive mother. In addition to the aforementioned therapy, I recommend a book called "Codependent No More" by Melody Beattie to both of you. My ex-husband actually mailed this book to me when I was pregnant and he was in rehab. Her (and your) situation is not unique. Reading about the dependent-codependent dynamic may help you look at the situation more objectively and clarify next steps. My best wishes to you and your family. Please keep us posted.
  7. My text is Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change by Silberberg. Fun: My school does offer tutoring. I will check it out. Thanks.
  8. Chemistry is kicking my butt. I don't like the instructor or the text book. (Maybe it's just the chemistry I don't like, but I don't think it should be as hard as it is for me.) Anyway, I was wondering if any of you know of some good internet resources or perhaps a good supporting text.
  9. I have found outlining the chapter to be very helpful. Yes, it is time consuming, but I am able to really retain the information when I do this, and during the process I create a great study guide. I carry my outlines with me, so any time I have a spare moment I can study. You'd be surprised at the number of study opportunities you'll have if you do this. If you highlight text during the lecture you will have an idea what should be included in your outline. Most text books have companion websites with quizzes, flash cards, and other study aids--I frequently utilize these. If I am not clear on a certain concept or just want to gain better understanding, I look it up on the internet or in another text book. I also seek out good internet resources for a particular class. I have found some really useful internet sites created by instructors teaching the subject I am taking at various other colleges. For some, reading their notes out loud is helpful, because they are verbalizing and hearing the words. It just depends on what works for you and how you best absorb information. I think the more parts of your brain you can engage, the better. Using a variety of methods works best for most people. Best of luck to you. :)
  10. Good luck to all my fellow DCCCD students! I will be applying to the Jan 06 EC/NL program. I have completed all the application requirements except the NET. I have an appointment to take the NET on Tuesday and will turn in my application at that time. My first campus choice is EC because I live in Mesquite. Parking is expensive in the West End where EC is located so I plan to park on the east side of downtown (some lots are only $.50 all day) then take the train to EC because full time EC students can ride DART for free. I have a 3.77 on my pre-reqs (got a B in Algebra), and I have completed 6 hours of support courses so far. I hope that is good enough to get in. If not, I will apply to fall-start programs at EC, Brookhaven, and TVCC. Currently I am registered at Eastfield for A&P II, Spanish 1411, and Chemistry 1411 this fall--all are 4 credit hour classes.
  11. I suffered similar symptoms 3 years ago. I had tingling in my hands and feet. I also had a few panic attacks during that same time frame but didn't associate it with the other symptoms until later. In addition, my mind was foggy--I couldn't think, and I had trouble remembering everything. I, too, was afraid that I might have MS or some other neurological poblem. I did some investigating on the internet and discovered my symptoms were the same as someone with a B12 deficiency. I immediately started supplements and have been symptom-free since. I haven't had anymore panic attacks either. I have learned through a little more research that even people with "normal" levels of B12 can benefit with supplements. Some researches have suggested that we may need more B12 than previously thought. B12 is available in the diet in meat (beef, poultry, fish, etc.), eggs, and dairy. I am a vegetarian, however, I do eat eggs and limited amounts of dairy, so it's doubtful that I would have been considered "deficient" by current opinion. Your symptoms may have a different cause, but I wanted to share my experience in case it helps. B12 is cheap and easy to supplement, so it might be worth trying anyway. Good luck to you.

These sites appear to be editorials. The first one even claims "Much of the world's land surface is empty. . ." EMPTY?! Apparently, the author believes if people aren't occupying it, it's empty. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course. The fact is population has historically increased EXPONENTIALLY. Most of you have had college algebra, so you can picture what that looks like on a graph. I don't know how far we are from being unsustainable--50 years or 1,000,000 years, but I do know if we wait until we're almost there it will be too late. Personally, I'd rather err on the side of caution. Here's another site to check out: www.popconnect.com.

My post was about the number of children in the subject family, not about what makes a responsible parent. Of course responsibility is not "only about the numbers", but the number of children one chooses to have does factor in. I believe it IS very irresponsible to have so many children for more reasons than I care to list (most have probably already been listed by other posters). Please consider that it is not just about one generation of children. All 16 children will likely reproduce, and I think it's a safe bet that some of them will want large families as well.
  14. Try not to get too discouraged. Find out which assessment test the cc uses, and get the appropriate study guide. They should allow you to retake the test. You may still need some developmental classes, but probably not five once you have a chance to prepare for the test. Check with your bank and see if they offer educational loans. Don't worry right now how you're going to pay for the entire program--just take it one semester at a time. Best of luck to you.:)

I think it is terribly irresponsible of this mom & dad, and I think it is deplorable that they received an award and praise for being so irresponsible. This is NOT just about one family. This family does not live in a vacuum. It affects all of us down the line, especially the children that will inherit the earth. Make the connection: www.popconnect.org.
