CGFNS exam is not a mandatory exam for licensure in the US. The only two exams are NCLEX-RN and the series of English exams, if you are not exempt from them.
The CGFNS exam is waived for Michigan if you are a Canadian nurse, or have worked for at least five years in the US as an RN. It is currently the only state where you cannot get licensed in another state, then endorse to there.
Illinois recently abandoned its requirement for the CGFNS exam, and now only requires the CES.
Most states are now just requiring the Credentials Evaluation Service (CES) done by CGFNS. This is different than the exam.
Immigration only requires that one exam be done, CGFNS or NCLEX. You will ultimately be required to sit for the NCLEX exam, so if you can afford to take that one, then that is the way to go.
Hope that this clears up any rumors that are flying around the world at the moment.
Anansi, Hi, I also took the CGFNS exam last Nov 9, 2005. Is it already out? Until now I havent receive any post from them? I am currently working in Brunei right now.
hi..i also took the nov.9 cgfns exam and last december i already received a confirmation letter that i passed the exam..by this time, you should have received yours already.. or better yet check your status at http://www.cgfns.org , you need to register ,then view your certification program status goodluck
You must be an RN to work inthe US and get a visa to work. The only way that you can work with the PN exam, is if you already passed the CGFNS exam.
It isn't achoice as to which exam to take, all nurses working in the US must take the NCLEX, it is our licensing exam. Soem states require that a foreign grad take the CGFNS exam in order to meet their requirements to even sit for the NCLEX exam and get a license in that state. It definitely is not a choice left up to the nurs in most accounts.
hi I am third, a registered nurse from the philippines...
this is a very interesting site for nurses!
I would like to ask some questions regarding the cgfns exam, hope someone from this forum could help me...
What is the total score for the cgfns exam, i am quite confused, i took the exam this march and i heard from a friend that you have to get a score of 400 to pass the exam while we only answered 271 questions.. i was not enlightened regarding these facts for I never entered a review center. Hope you could help me on this...
thanks..
i also have this experinced with the cgfns system, in the correspondece area they states they sent me letters starting from the welcome notice donw to inactivity letters but none of this reached me.
one thing also for the DHL courier , i filled up the form requesting from the IDP to froward my IELTS result to CGFNS/ICHP, they gave me my the tracking number. and to think DHL will deliver it in a span of 48hours. i check the tracking online system and it says it was deliverd already. its been a month of waiting to change the status in my cgfns confirming recieving my result but up to know i am waiting for it.
i dont know why dont they hire more eployees to work this papers since influx of large of examinees are getting this exam and the fact they increase the service fee. stating the mission a non-profit institution.

thank you very much for all your writings. I'm, a Portuguese nurse, certificated by national consil of nurses in Portugal and i'm trying to go to USA. Here only exist one company that deals with this kind of matters and i think they don't know very well how to do it. They are asking me for cgfns if i want to work in USA, do i realy need this exam? maybe in order to get a visa! or a license work, or something before emigrate. Exist other easier way to do it, maby doing only one nursing exam and english exam.
thank you once again for your care.
