Career changer

I’m changing careers because I left my job last year and I’ve always wanted to try nursing, at least it has been on my mind for the last 15 years. I’m starting school next month. The one thing I’m afraid of is being bullied by other nurses. I keep reading that it happens with frequency, so I am worried about how I will be treated in the work environment.

Don't do dumb things where you put the patient at risk. They'll be mean. Many of them are overprotective of their patients or residents.

Help around during the clinicals if you aren't busy. It helps to alleviate the workload. Don't say, "I'm a student nurse. I don't do that..."

Anyway, no, in general, nurses are good people. I haven't have any issue with them. They encouraged me to be a nurse. They thought I could do more than having a CNA.

Be kind and pleasantly assertive. Realize that other people's problems are their own--don't let them become yours.

This is a stressful profession and while there is no excuse for bullying, there are a lot of human dynamics that come with working under high stress.

For now just study hard and do everything you can to lay down a good foundation for yourself--which is what will help your future patients as well as yourself. If you tend to be easily or deeply affected by others' words and actions, now is a good time to start working toward being less affected by those things. You can't control others, the only thing you can do is put yourself in the best position to operate with a healthy mindset. You can do it.

Best of luck.

I don't know much about the bullying that goes on but just know that there are a lot of career changers in nursing! You're not alone ?
