Can you take pre-reqs while in LPN program

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Hello to all, i am a aspiring nursing student. I was wondering in everyones experience is the LPN training program so rigorous that you cannot take extra classes outside of the LPN program and still have time to work. I am taking my first 2 years of pre-reqs at my local community college, so that i can transfer them to a major university. But I would also like to take the LPN course offered, so i could have a better job while i am in nursing school. I am currently awaiting my CNA boards test in september. But I also have a child and he is growing everyday, so i have responsibilities.( I need money) and CNA job wont pay what i feel he and I will need. Im 18 and need solid advice:banghead:

from what i understand, and i could be wrong, being an lpn can override some of your prerequisites.

my plan is to go to become an lpn and then go to my local community college to finish my rn. i will earn an associates degree and get my rn. as an lpn, i will be able to do that in three semesters instead of four. i also wont have to take an prerequisites for my two year degree in nursing.

from there i will earn my bsn. but first i will get my lpn. i am currently a certified nurse aide right now and i am glad i became and aide because i really got a chance to get some experience in the nursing field before taking the time and money to go through school. i am also relieved that my first experiences with patient care wont be while i am in school.

hope that helps you,

Take one step at time. Focus on doing the best you can in the PN programme. It is intense and time consuming.

PN eduation is not nursing for dummies and deserves your full attention.

Exactly and I would also like to add that if you decide to take pre-req's while studying to become a PN, financial aid may be a problem...If you are recieving financial aid for one school, you cannot recieve aid at the other school....unless you are going to the same school for both....Good luck on whatever you decide and I hope and pray that you make the right decision...

I took a gen ed class toward my RN program while in LPN school and took classes toward my BSN while in the ADN program. Nothing really hard though stuff like humanities, growth & development a couple of CLEPs etc. Good luck.

I'm doing what Jules did The psych course I had that will expire I am retaking online while going to LVN school. Only 3 exams over 16 weeks with a 48hr time period in which to log in a take them

Hi, are you sure your psych class will expire? The only ones that expired for us were the sciences like Micro, A&P etc. and even those were negotiatable. Just didn't want you to take something you could avoid. :)

Yeah EVERYTHING expires for at least 3 of the bridge programs I am looking at. It bites to say the least. I mean english doesn't change... It's just another way of weeding out candidates.

okay i was wrong. there are still pre-reqs but i don't plan on taking any while i am attending lpn school full-time. i am going to take them after i get my lpn. i plan to take it step by step.

i think that would be very time consuming i dont think thats a good idea

I might do this 3rd semester of LPN school, only because I only need 1-2 classes in order to apply to an LPN to RN bridge program (well those couple classes plus my LPN cert), but I'm not doing it first semester for sure and I'm going to see how I'm doing/feeling when the time comes. If I was you I would just play it by ear. If I had nothing going on on Fridays and could take a Friday morning class for instance, I might, but i would not want to stretch myself too thin and end up getting a low grade in something. If you're planning on going "all the way" then your GPA is really going to matter, so better to spend your time trying to get an A in everything than getting Bs/Cs and getting pre-reqs done early.

I'm going to be taking med term online during the first half of LPN school because it's required to be completed by Dec. Stinks but it's better than waiting another school year just for one class. Also, I'll probably be taking A&PII in the spring or summer while I'm finishing up my LPN because I need it for the bridging program and I want to go straight into it. Again, it's not ideal, but you do what you have to do, kwim?
