Can you recommend a good accel BSN nursing program in California?

Published

Hi,

I will have my BA soon in a non science major (end of 08). I decide Nursing is going to be my career. I think I have to take some more science classes to meet the pre reqs since I didn't take those yet. Probably in the Spring of 09 I will take the rest of the pre reqs to meet the requirement. My question is: I want to start the accel nursing program in the Fall of 09...is this do-able? Do you know of any schools that I can apply to in January 09 that will accept students with pre-reqs in progress? This is a career change for me and I am not getting any younger..I just want to be done with Nursing school so I can start working...lol....If you have gone this path please share your ideas. Much appreciated...

check out allnursingschools.com & from there you can check each school's individual website regarding whether or not they take students with pre-reqs in progress. good luck! :)

Cal State LA has an Entry Level Master's degree program for non nursing degree individuals. www.calstatela.edu One of the best in the nation, according to US News and World Report: http://www.calstatela.edu/univ/ppa/newsrel/usnews07-nursing.htm

Samuel Merritt has a one year accelerated BSN program. they have the program at San Francisco, Oakland, San Mateo and Sacramento. THere are about 9 pre-reqs. The best thing to do is look on their website. www.samuelmerritt.edu Not sure how many pre-reqs you have done, but I guess if you took 4 or 5 classes per semester it is doable and they do take apps with classes in progress

Specializes in Home Health, Internal med. Urgent Care.

I went through the accelerated program at Mt St Mary's college in Los Angeles to get my BSN. It cost a lot but WELL worth it. I started there when I was 30 and did fine. (this was in 1990)Finished in 1 1/2 years. They had some classes one could take as independent study or test out on if you feel you can. I had been a Psych Tech before I became an RN so I took the final exam for abnormal psychology and passed it. Check it out....;)

Specializes in Ante-Intra-Postpartum, Post Gyne.

what constitutes an accelerated BSN program? The class behind me all and all those to follow changed to a 5 semester program (not including pre-reqs) and they start a new class every semester; minus summer

Specializes in Home Health, Internal med. Urgent Care.

I'm not really sure of the definition of accelerated is, but being able to take a couple independent study classes while in classes that is physically attended sure sped the process up. I'm not sure if other private colleges do this but was a good plan to me:yeah:

That's good to hear! That's one of the schools I will be applying to! ......and hopefully I will get in!

Hi HapiYoga,

National University in San Diego is an accelerated BSN program...the program is about 23 months. The cost is roughly $50k and there isn't a ginormous wait list. You need to take a test to get in and write a 3-4 paper about why you want to be a nurse...GPA plays a factor in admission and reference letters, community leadership, etc. It's a great option in SD. Hope this helps:heartbeat
