Can one become a nurse if one has HPV?

Published

I read "Thread" of the same question but for Genital Herpes, but i'm still not too sure.

I have HPV and i'm interested in becoming a nurse, i wanted to know if that would cause a problem when i get the physical?:banghead:.....

Thanks in advance!!!:D

If you have genital HPV it is transmitted through genital contact. As a nurse you will not be having this with your patients. Therefore it should not be a problem.

Here is what the CDC says about HPV:

Some of the questions on the physical seemed very intrusive. On issues that did not impair my ability to perform nursing duties and that did not affect patient safety, I drew a line through them and declined to answer/be examined on privacy grounds. I never got any flak from my school about it. It's a matter of respect and self-respect to me not to be asked or answer irrelevant health questions.

Many many people have HPV and it does not impair their ability to be nurses in the least and it is no danger to patients unless the nurse is behaving in a completely unethical way.

Unless times have changed, I do not recall a lady partsl exam as part of a physical for nursing school admissions or when getting employed as a nurse. Hope that helps.

Unless you plan on having sex with your pt's, no, it shouldn't be an issue.

We have nurses with HIV, HSV, all sorts of diseases; why would HPV be an issue?

Specializes in Oncology.

I think many people with HPV don't even know they have it.

Same here. We didn't need pelvics or anything like that for NS. It really isn't the school's business what is happening in the nether regions as it won't affect your job. I wouldn 't respond to it either.

Actually, I dare say most of us have some form of HPV and do not even know it. Cannot see an issue here.

It's none of anyone's business. If an employer or college ever asks, lie.
