Can I pursue RN career with solicit prostitute misdemeanor?

Published

I am interested in pursuing RN career. I don't know how to sugar coat what I am about to say because it is embarrassing, so here it goes. I have a misdemeanor conviction for soliciting the services of a prostitute. It happened 13 years ago. Will this have an affect on me when I apply to RN school? Also, after the miracle of me being accepted to RN school, how about applying for RN license?

Remote, non-violent 'minor' crimes which do not involve weapons or drugs *usually* will not keep you out of a nursing program. You will need to be forthright with schools and employers as you have been here.

Make appointments with the schools you are considering and present your case.

Best wishes

Does it show up on a standard criminal background/sex offender background check?

Any way to try to get it expunged? I actually had a professor who had a soliciting prostitution charge on his record. He was suspended and is still working, so there's that. Good luck to you!

I did a background check on myself online and it did show. Since schools and State Board of Registered Nurses do an FBI background check, it will still show even if it was expunged.

I just don't want to invest two years of time and money if can't get a RN license by the State.

this is a question for your state board of nursing; good luck. Don't be embarrassed; we've all done things we wished we hadn't when we were younger

If you are a registered sex offender, I would have to say you have very little chance. Solicitation most likely would be a different story.

Google the state rules and regulations for Registered nurses in your state. (Nurse Practice Act).

I was arrested for operating a body rub business without a license, but no charges were ever filed. I got my nursing license 2 years later, nothing showed up on my background check. I have been working as a nurse for 16 years. A few years ago, I did a background check on myself because we were moving to another state and I wanted to apply for my license. Well, now it shows up that I was arrested for Felony Prostitution! I’m like what the heck?! For the past 3 years I have been working on getting that expunged so that I can apply for my license in my current state. It is my understanding that if it is expunged it will not show up on your FBI background check. It can take 2-6 months to be removed once it is expunged, so you have to check yourself before you apply. Some states require that you divulge expunged records, others do not.
