Can I be discriminated against for political beliefs?

Nurses General Nursing

On facebook I have a habit of getting into discussions about the social aspects of politics. Im a conservative, I never use any racial epithets, never threaten violence and I use statistics to substantiate any claims I make. With that being said, conservative opinions are frowned upon today. With colleges and i'm assuming places of work being very liberal is there any way I could not be able to become a nurse because of me using my first amendment rights and expressing my beliefs?

Great advice here.

Why target yourself? Really? Just do your job. This is not about you and personality and beliefs.

Honestly, this is kind of a weird post. The fact that you feel the need to mention that you don't "use any racial epithets, never threaten violence", as though that is somehow a normal part of conservative expression is a bit disturbing.

True conservative views are not offensive to most folks who identify as liberal. On the other hand, if you are getting your talking points from Breitbart, and have given up on FOX because they have been taken over by the Feminazis- that is not conservatism.

If you post things on The World Wide Web that are offensive to people, don't be overly surprised that people are offended. If that is of concern to you, stop publicly saying things that offend people.

Really, it isn't all that complex. There was life before Facebook- you don't have to publicly announce your opinions to the world.

Oh yeah- I know it's been mentioned, but conservative views "frowned on"? Toughen up a bit. You aren't a victim.

No political problems are solved on Facebook other than creating division in families and amongst friends.

In a way it's been great to be able to throw out the trash. After reading some of the things I've read friends/family post, it's been a pleasure unfriending/unfamilying them. It has been illuminating watching the hoods come off the past 10 months or so...

THIS x1000.

Supporters of Trump being called racist just because of their vote.

What was the point of even posting this? For a debate? Not the place. Learn to shut your mouth on social media and be careful. Its easier than you think to be identified on here. I've seen it. Ive experienced it.

Not in my hospital. I work in a very conservative area and I'm as blue as they come. I just don't talk about it at work.

And I live in a very liberal area, yet many of my coworkers were very conservstive. I only learned so during the last campaign bc people couldn't help themselves but yap on about it.

From reading these posts, I'd guess that a majority of nurses are liberal. Just an observation.

Yet, as I'm reading through the posts, I'm seeing over and over nurses stating they are conservative.

I guess my question is: Why do you feel the need to state political beliefs at work?

I am a raging liberal, but none of my co-workers know that. We never discuss politics. We are all too busy caring for our patients to talk politics. To blow-off stress, we sometimes watch videos by some MD who made one to the tune of Friends In Low Places, renamed, Friends With Low Platelets.

And we sometimes look at houses for sale on-line. But we NEVER discuss politics.

My advise is to find some other way to bond with co-workers.

My favorite tidbit was about the sheriff who fired his deputies for not contributing to his campaign, and the court that said that was not illegal.
