Hey everyone,
A friend of my is a diploma RN. This was when you could take a college program only to become an RN. Would they be eligible to write the NCLEX? If so, what is the process? or would they have to complete an BScN program?
Any information is helpful.
Thank you so much

BSN, AD, and Hospital Diploma schools are all nursing schools, and all graduates may sit for the NCLEX exam. However, I don't think there are many Hospital Diploma schools left.

My assumption is that she is a diploma educated RN in Canada (based on the use of the word "BScN" instead of "BSN") and needs to take NCLEX to get licensed outside of Canada.

I'm pretty sure that to write for the NCLEX you have to have a minimum of a Masters in Nursing Education.

Not write for the NCLEX. Write the NCLEX; a phrase used by some to mean take the NCLEX.

Are you asking about someone taking the NCLEX or someone who creates questions? There are 3 educational routes to apply and TAKE the NCLEX: ADN, Diploma, and BSN. A Master's in any field is NOT required. Submitting questions to the NCLEX are a whole different animal. An MSN is the minimal educational requirement, but I so wish the sorts of problems nurses experience in the field were written by entry level nurse and fine tuned by those who know how to write (unbiased, clearly written) test questions.

This is the case in the US, but based on OP’s use of BScN, they are likely Canadian and if referring to Canadian NCLEX, the BScN is a requirement.

1. In order to write NCLEX in Canada is to upgrade the Diploma RN to BScN by enrolling to approved 2-3year bridging programs.
2. If the goal is to work in the US, another route is to apply in the US via examination to take NCLEX. Some State Board of Nursing (e.g. US States bordering Canada) have reciprocity with Canada so just endorsing the CDN RN registration is sufficient without the need to take NCLEX. But needing endorsement vs exam depends on what period the Canadian National Registration Examination was taken.
