Calling all Truman College Nursing Students

Published

Hi,

Are there any nursing students from Truman on here? Past or present. I have some questions that I can't seem to find the answer to on their website.

1. Is the admission still "lottery system" based? How would that exactly work? I saw on their website that they award points on GPA (ex: "4 X 4 = 16 pts for an A in A&P"). If it's a lottery, how come they look at GPA?

2. What GPA did you have when you got in? Are you a current or past student?

3. If it's GPA based, I think I'll have more luck getting in like that than the lottery. One last thing I wanted to ask, would any of you Truman students, past or present, be willing to sell or let me borrow your notes from Truman's Nursing School? I know you might think I'm trying to find an easy way out or cheat or something. What I really want to do, since I have the summer off, is to study ahead. I have done this in the past with Anatomy and Physiology and it has helped me tons. That's just how I learn. When I have free time, I just like to look at things from a non rushed way. Once school starts, I'll have 17 credit hours of classes and plus work. I will also be studying ahead for Microbiology and A&P this summer so I can really have a lot of time to digest the material.

*Please if you know anyone that would let me use their notes, contact me and I'll work someting out with them. :specs:

Thanks

They said health insurance is NOT required

I don't have the money for it either

Relax Everyone! I do not think you all need to get a CBC, why in the world woud you need that? Why would they need to know how many Bands you have and your RBC count? I did not need one of those when i started last year. I needed to get a titer done which I had done at a clinic on Fullerton and Californiaish, I just called around random clinics until I found one that would do it. The cheapest place to get the drug screen is this place downtown on Michigan Ave that Truman gave me the info about, it was on $35. The problem is you need a 10 panel drug screen, most places like clinics only do a 7. When I went to the clinic I told them I needed a 10 panel and they did a 7 anyway, when I took my results to Truman they told me it was no good and that I needed to take another drug test and gave me the info for the one downtown so I went straight there and they gave me the results immediately. You will also need the background check which was like 30 bucks and you do it online. CPR can be taken at the city colleges you just sign up like you would a summer class, I took it at Truman and it was about 6 hours long I think. I also needed to get a Tetorifice shot as well as the Hep B series, they only want to know that you have started the series when you start school(it takes 5 months to complete). You dont need insurance. Relax about the books, you need all the books, yes you do, you will use them all but do not panic. The most important ones for 101 are the Fundamentals boook and the Hesi book as well as the Reviews and rationals Fundamentals book. Those were the main books we used all semester, oh and the Lilley pharm text.

In regards to the person that had the question about working, I work full time at a very stressful job as a manager of a huge store in the city full time, I got an A in 101 and 102. You can work and succeed. Let me know if you all have any questions I can answer for you!

thank you so much for your input, gonnabenurse11

hahahahahaha!!! Thank you gonnabeanurse11. Will get it together, its just a lot in to take in right now...

Hello guys,

I just called the nursing department. You don't need urinalysis, but you do need the CBC. The book list emailed to you is just to help you find the required text books since they have all the the information needed e.g. ISBN number, edition, authors name. Stick to the list of books given during orientation day. Also, if you are wondering, it is not mandatory to have health insurance during the program. You will be responsible for your health in case you get hurt or sick during the program. In case you guys haven't done CPR training I just did mine on Saturday. I did it with CPR associates INC. They have locations in foster and Peterson. They have classes Monday-Saturday. I payed $35 dollars for the class. I honestly believe that we need to help each other, thats the only way we are going to finish this program!!!

Hey Frida26,

I also called the nursing department today at 11:30 a.m. and spoke with the department secretary and she said: NO UNINALYSIS & NO CBC. So, the info they had originally given out at orientation was correct (I was in the morning one.). For the book list, she told me the same thing. Follow the two sheets given at orientation and they will have the FINAL BOOK LISTS by end of June. So, she said she'll e-mail us the FINAL BOOK LIST or you can stop by Truman and see it (end of June).

Frida26, PLEASE post if you hear anything new and EVERYONE else also. Thanks to all who contributed to clarify all the confusion we have had. :)

gonnabenurse11,

Quick questions: how do you feel after the first year? what is one thing you would recommend freshmen do this summer before starting the program? I feel that I should recap anatomy, I took it a while back and feel that I forgot so much....

The first year at Truman flew by incredibly fast. I cant believe that I am starting second year in a few months, its amazing! I feel like it was yesterday that I was frantically searching the threads here for info on Truman and advice on how to prepare. I dont think that you need to brush up on anatomy at all, nursing school questions are all application not memorization. I think that you should enjoy the summer as much as you can! Just make sure that you get a clipboard for clinical that has storage inside and a nice stethascope not one of the 15 dollar prestige ones that you wont be able to hear anything out of and focus on ensuring that you have all the prep work done like your medical stuff and order your uniforms for clinical and get white shoes etc. I bought a rolling bookbag the first semester but now i realized I dont need that because you will never have to bring any books to class so it was kind of a waste. Spend alot of time with your friends and family because you are about to make new friends in school that you will spend all day, everyday your available in the local coffee shop or library studying with. These friends will be priceless to your nursing school success.

Hi everyone,

This is my first message on this thread. Just wondering if Truman's using lottery or ranking sysytem this coming Fall (2010)/Spring (2011). I've read one response here which is from last year that Truman will start doing ranking system (based on GPA) this year. Is it true?

Thanks!

Yes, it is GPA based. No more lottery.

gonnabeanurse11 or anybody,

Is the lab coat required for our program? I bought everything else but that yesterday. Should I buy it???

Yes buy it! you need the pockets to carry a pocket guide, money, your stethascope, all sorts of things my pockets are always overflowing. If you take Kipnis she requires it anyway. Plus you will look much better wearing it then not, and you will definetly need it trust me. When I took Murphy last semester she would hand me meds and needles, alcohol swabs, saline filled syringes etc and told me to put them in my pocket until she had time to come with me to administer them which was always about 2 hours later. No lab coat=No pockets.

wanted to let everyone know that today I went to Truman and the parking lot by the lake is metered and AT LEAST it let you pay for as many as 24 hours. That is good news, I was afraid that it will have a time limit just as the rest of the meters in chicago.

The cost is $1 an hour from 9am-9pm and 0.25 cents from 9pm to 9 am.
