Hi,
Are there any nursing students from Truman on here? Past or present. I have some questions that I can't seem to find the answer to on their website.
1. Is the admission still "lottery system" based? How would that exactly work? I saw on their website that they award points on GPA (ex: "4 X 4 = 16 pts for an A in A&P"). If it's a lottery, how come they look at GPA?
2. What GPA did you have when you got in? Are you a current or past student?
3. If it's GPA based, I think I'll have more luck getting in like that than the lottery. One last thing I wanted to ask, would any of you Truman students, past or present, be willing to sell or let me borrow your notes from Truman's Nursing School? I know you might think I'm trying to find an easy way out or cheat or something. What I really want to do, since I have the summer off, is to study ahead. I have done this in the past with Anatomy and Physiology and it has helped me tons. That's just how I learn. When I have free time, I just like to look at things from a non rushed way. Once school starts, I'll have 17 credit hours of classes and plus work. I will also be studying ahead for Microbiology and A&P this summer so I can really have a lot of time to digest the material.
*Please if you know anyone that would let me use their notes, contact me and I'll work someting out with them.
Thanks
Hi 4hana9, I was wondering the same thing about the stethoscope and I see that this website has great threads on the subject. I just typed the question in the search box and gave me a lot of threads, but I have not decided on one jet
Hey Ruby2623, I am reading the threads just like you. It seems the one that keeps on coming up is the "Littmann Classic IISE". Some people have said the "lightweight" is not the one to get because the sounds are not as good. Also, the Littmann Cardiology is a more advanced one, it's good, but also really bulky. Other tip I read was to keep your stethoscope with you all the time (people steal them). I read a lot on here, but obviously there are many more threads. What info and tips have you gathered from your readings? Which Littmann model has come up the most for you? Please share and anyone else share too so we can help each other out. :)
4hana9, I was reading that the most recommended on the threads was the "Littmann Classic II SE" as well. It is perfect for nursing students because you can hear very good and it has a diaphragm and bell side so it can be used in peds and ob/gyn.
The "Littmann Classic II SE" (mentioned above)
The "Littmann Master Classic II" is good, but not recommended for peds and ob/gyn.
The "Littman lightweight II SE" as you mentioned, is good but people recommend the 'Littmann classic II SE" instead.
The "Littmann Cardiology III" is excellent, you can use it for peds and ob/gyn as well because has the bell side on it, but it is bulky as you mentioned and is pricey as well.
I already decided for the "Littmann classic II SE" is in a good price range.
for prices I looked on the recommended websites:
Allhearts.com
steeles.com
medisave.net
bestbuymd.com
The cheapest is steeles.com

I am also going to get the "Littmann Classic II SE". I might get it from ebay because it's coming up a little cheaper than steeles.com
Beck's bookstore has all but one of the Nursing packages ready. They have:Elsevier (package) $608.50
Pearson (two textbooks) $73.15
Fundamentals (one book) $36.95
Lippincot (package) $224.95
They're still waiting for the package from Prentice Hall. Also, add tax to all of the packages.
I would recommend not to get the ENTIRE book bundle. There are way too many books in that bundle that you will never use during your years in the program. I would recommend to only get the very important ones such as the fundamentals, drug book, med-surg(dunno if it's still Lewis), etc.. I would buy them seperately from half.com or amazon. You will save a ton of money this away. Seriously, I wish someone could have gave me this tip before buying that bundle. If you need to know which books will be the utmost important for the first year, then I would ask a freshman nursing instructor. I know it may be easier to just buy everything from Becks, but if you want to save some money, then take my tip.
Btw, I graduated from Truman in May and just recently passed the NCLEX in the first try. Good luck to all of you who are entering and currently in the program!!

Thanks for your kind advice GT-R! I was thinking something along those lines too trying to decide if it's really worth it. Like you said, I don't even think there's a way to cover that much stuff. I mean some of the books have up to 60 chapters. I'll look into that a little more.
Which model of the Littmann stethoscope did you buy? Or, which one did they require when you were in the program? I'm trying to decide if I should get it now or wait until school starts.
Congradulations to you for making it through the program and for passing your NCLEX on the first try! You've made it! You're a nurse now!
Quick question :Do we need H1N1 and flu vaccines? If so, where did you go have them done? I called a few clinics and they did not have them.
Yes, we do need both the H1N1 and the flu vaccine. I got the H1N1 done at my doctor's office. She had them in stock. The flu vaccine is only available during the flu season. I called Truman and explained this and they told me it was ok as long as the doctor wrote "not due yet" or "not available yet, will be availble in 3 months" or something similar. For the H1N1 you should not have a problem getting it anywhere as it is not a seasonal vaccine. If you want the address where I got mine, you can private message me and I'll give you the information.
4hana9, I have a question, I have my Hepatitis B titer back and it says "Non-Reactive". Do you know what that means? does that mean They are negative? Do I still have to have the Three injections?. I called vanisha at Truman and she did not know what that meant and said she was going to ask and call me back and she never did. Does anybody know if we still have to have the injections?

Thank you irinasal and frida26 for your informative posts! :)
I searched the Littmann stethoscopes, but I just don't know which one to get. I wish they had given us a model number or something. At orientation, they just mentioned for us to get a Littmann. Online, the Littmann ranges from a couple hundred dollars to a thousand something dollars. I don't think it'll be that expensive (since those were specific cardiology stethoscopes), but I think we can expect it to run in the couple of hundreds.
I hope to God that you are right frida26 and that they'll be getting rid of the HESI. From all the horror stories that I've heard about that exam from the people in the program, I really wouldn't ever want to take it either.
Please anyone post any new information you have and I will do the same also. Thanks to all who contribute to this thread.
