Calling all Truman College Nursing Students

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hi,

Are there any nursing students from Truman on here? Past or present. I have some questions that I can't seem to find the answer to on their website.

1. Is the admission still "lottery system" based? How would that exactly work? I saw on their website that they award points on GPA (ex: "4 X 4 = 16 pts for an A in A&P"). If it's a lottery, how come they look at GPA?

2. What GPA did you have when you got in? Are you a current or past student?

3. If it's GPA based, I think I'll have more luck getting in like that than the lottery. One last thing I wanted to ask, would any of you Truman students, past or present, be willing to sell or let me borrow your notes from Truman's Nursing School? I know you might think I'm trying to find an easy way out or cheat or something. What I really want to do, since I have the summer off, is to study ahead. I have done this in the past with Anatomy and Physiology and it has helped me tons. That's just how I learn. When I have free time, I just like to look at things from a non rushed way. Once school starts, I'll have 17 credit hours of classes and plus work. I will also be studying ahead for Microbiology and A&P this summer so I can really have a lot of time to digest the material.

*Please if you know anyone that would let me use their notes, contact me and I'll work someting out with them. :specs:

Thanks

It should be negative for the antigen but if it is positive for the antibody that would mean you have antibodies to fight off the hep. B infection

xoloveinautumn, it says "Hepatitis B -Surface Antibody QL- Non-Reactive". so that means I dont have antibodies to fight off the infection and need to have the injections?

I am sorry, but I have so much problems with medical assistants at my doctors office, they seem to be clueless like my self(I am not familiar with titers) and they are not answering my questions. when I went to have all my titers done, the girl that did my blood for my titers forgot to draw blood for the Hepatitis B and when she gave me copy of my titers I asked for the Hepatitis titer, and she said " we forgot to do that one" so I had to go another day to have it done:mad:. I have my titers for Varicella, Rubella, Rubeola, and now the Hep B, I asked her for The Mumps and she said it was part of the Rubeola :uhoh3:. I am just so mad at the incompetence, but I have to stick to them because I have an HMO and have to do everything through them:mad:. Can someone tell me if in fact the Mumps titer is part of the Rubeola(Measles) titer? please help.

When you are young you usually get the MMR vacine which will make antibodies against measles mumps and rubella

this table explains the hepatitis titer well! hope that helps=)

So if you have the hepatitis b surface antibody a vaccine is not needed

Ruby2623,

Mumps vaccine is usually given together with measles and rubella vaccines in a shot called MMR. Thats what they gave me, look in your vaccine consent notice and you will notice that they gave you a vaccine called MMR: (Measles, Mumps, Rubella). Hope this helps!

Thank you xoloveinautumn, that table helped me a lot. In that table it states that it is a 3-part blood test and that the results "can be returned within 7-10 days", I got my results 3days later and they only gave me the "surface Antibody" result and that's it. I am going to call the office tomorrow (because they are not open today) and ask if they received the other two the "surface Antigen" and the "core Antibody" which are also needed. Again, I really hope they did order the right( complete) Hepatitis B blood panel! I am so mad

Frida26,

when did you get the Mumps vaccine?

Ruby2623,

I received the MMR vaccine last month.

so, now that we are coming upon the deadline to turn in our requirements for clinicals (aug.1), i have everything done and ready to go except for the criminal background check. i ordered mine yesterday afternoon, and received a message that it would take anywhere from 2-5 business days to be completed! i know i have only myself to blame for waiting so long, but i have ordered background checks before and they were always done super fast. (as in, within an hour or two at most).

anyone have theirs completed already and can tell me how long it took to get the results back??

or anyone else in my shoes and waiting for theirs? any soothing words would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Don,t worry, I received mine in a few days. I know it's late, but you shoud be fine by Friday. I already submitted my forder, I didn't have the Influenza vaccine, but, thanks to the flooding on Friday, I found the paper with the vaccine I did last fall. So I should be set now if they require to have that done.

Thanks for letting me know the turnaround time for the background check! :) I just checked the status, and they have the residency portion completed already.

But the criminal background is still pending. So I called them and they explained that the ETA they cite is an over-estimation and that I should have it all complete by Wednesday or Thursday. The company rep also told me they send a copy to Truman directly.

Do I need to include a printout of the background check with the rest of the paperwork we have to turn it by Aug. 1?

Oh, and has anyone else had any hiccups with other portions of the requirements -- i.e, the drug test was not the right one, they are missing some of the vaccines/titers...?

I have 3 different versions of the immunization records. One that has most of my completed requirements is for the labs I had done to get medical clearance for the hospital I work at (which is also a Truman clinical site). I doubt there will be any issues with that. Then I have my physical exam, flu shots and Tdap (or Dtap) from my father's medical office plus a physical exam he did last Christmas. When I called Truman, they said it was ok to have multiple sources for the long list of immunizations/titers and to have a physical from last Christmas.

If anyone still needs a physical or 10-panel drug screen, Argyle clinic is very cheap and efficient. $50 for the 10-panel test (other places charge $90-100). the physical exam is also only $50, which I have heard is also less expensive than other places. Plus, they're not busy so you can get in quick and not have to wait around to be seen once you come in.

Last question, anyone order their books online through Becks? They didn't have them available online a few weeks ago, and told me to check back by 1st week of August. I just want to get everything taken care of asap so I can relax a bit before school starts on the 23rd.

I submitted a copy of everything in the paperwork required for Truman and I also made copies of everything for myself! They have not contacted me regarding anything missing and I submitted the paperwork last month. Becks only has 2 package bundles they are still waiting for the last one. Finally, can someone please tell me what is the title of the HESI book that we need to get and what edition. I will greatly appreciate it! Thanks

i am looking into the hesi book, trying to track down a reliable source and (ideally) a reasonable price. i will post when i have some info to share.

was trying to get all of my books from becks through their website so i can just stop in a pick them up in one trip -- trying to avoid any additional hassle after dealing with all the fun of getting my clinical requirements together.:uhoh3:

becks told me over the phone they should have all the course packs in by the first week of august. this was when i called them in early july. i will be calling again on monday to see how far along they are with their orders.

and yes, regarding the clinical requirements paperwork, i have made copies of everything for myself as well. highly recommended to anyone who has not done so. they have something like 300+ students to keep track of, so you never know if something may get lost in the shuffle. and after going through what seemed like an endless array of paperwork, tests, etc, i am not taking any chances.

oh, and if anyone has not yet purchased a stethoscope, allheart.com is having a really great sale. i got a littman with bell and diaphragm normally priced at $149 for $65 and change. their shipping is free, i believe. they also have nurses watches (not that cute, but analog with a clear second hand and military time) for pretty cheap and some other materials for students...cute clipboard for clinicals with a calculator, pen holder and imprinted with tons of reference material. i am not sure this is allowed, but it was so inexpensive i thought i would go ahead and buy it anyway.

oh, and if anyone on here has (or had) their clinicals at u of c, would love to chat beforehand. i live clear across town, and i want to be a bit oriented before the first day. my bf has an office there and he says parking is very pricey. maybe there is an "early bird" rate for those of us that are parking near the medical center before 7am?

thanks for the continued great advice truman people! it is a great thing to have a forum like this so we can all help each other out.
