Yes buy it! you need the pockets to carry a pocket guide, money, your stethascope, all sorts of things my pockets are always overflowing. If you take Kipnis she requires it anyway. Plus you will look much better wearing it then not, and you will definetly need it trust me. When I took Murphy last semester she would hand me meds and needles, alcohol swabs, saline filled syringes etc and told me to put them in my pocket until she had time to come with me to administer them which was always about 2 hours later. No lab coat=No pockets.

The first year at Truman flew by incredibly fast. I cant believe that I am starting second year in a few months, its amazing! I feel like it was yesterday that I was frantically searching the threads here for info on Truman and advice on how to prepare. I dont think that you need to brush up on anatomy at all, nursing school questions are all application not memorization. I think that you should enjoy the summer as much as you can! Just make sure that you get a clipboard for clinical that has storage inside and a nice stethascope not one of the 15 dollar prestige ones that you wont be able to hear anything out of and focus on ensuring that you have all the prep work done like your medical stuff and order your uniforms for clinical and get white shoes etc. I bought a rolling bookbag the first semester but now i realized I dont need that because you will never have to bring any books to class so it was kind of a waste. Spend alot of time with your friends and family because you are about to make new friends in school that you will spend all day, everyday your available in the local coffee shop or library studying with. These friends will be priceless to your nursing school success.

Relax Everyone! I do not think you all need to get a CBC, why in the world woud you need that? Why would they need to know how many Bands you have and your RBC count? I did not need one of those when i started last year. I needed to get a titer done which I had done at a clinic on Fullerton and Californiaish, I just called around random clinics until I found one that would do it. The cheapest place to get the drug screen is this place downtown on Michigan Ave that Truman gave me the info about, it was on $35. The problem is you need a 10 panel drug screen, most places like clinics only do a 7. When I went to the clinic I told them I needed a 10 panel and they did a 7 anyway, when I took my results to Truman they told me it was no good and that I needed to take another drug test and gave me the info for the one downtown so I went straight there and they gave me the results immediately. You will also need the background check which was like 30 bucks and you do it online. CPR can be taken at the city colleges you just sign up like you would a summer class, I took it at Truman and it was about 6 hours long I think. I also needed to get a Tetorifice shot as well as the Hep B series, they only want to know that you have started the series when you start school(it takes 5 months to complete). You dont need insurance. Relax about the books, you need all the books, yes you do, you will use them all but do not panic. The most important ones for 101 are the Fundamentals boook and the Hesi book as well as the Reviews and rationals Fundamentals book. Those were the main books we used all semester, oh and the Lilley pharm text. In regards to the person that had the question about working, I work full time at a very stressful job as a manager of a huge store in the city full time, I got an A in 101 and 102. You can work and succeed. Let me know if you all have any questions I can answer for you!

Yes just make sure that you never miss class or clinical ever because it will really put you at a disadvantage. Also, make sure that you volunteer to do things in clinical or see things or whatever is offered take it! I would purchase the Fundamentals Success book and the Saunders NCLEX book because both of those were extremely helpful to me in 101. I dont know how you study but having a study partner or people that you routinely study with is very helpful in nursing school! I asked a girl in my 101 class if she wanted to study with me before our first exam and ever since then we have become the best of friends and have studied for every exam together in 101 and 102, it is invaluble to have friends that you go to school with. I am fortunate to have become good friends with several people from 101 and had them in my 102 class and now they will be in class with me again for 3rd semester, honestly I dont know what I would do without them. I cant think of anything else right now but as soon as I do I will post them!

Yes Kipnis has class from 9-1050 MW and the other teachers from 11-1250. That is all the lecture for 101 but you also have to attend a skills lab each week. There is a 2 hour skills lab that you have to take each week where you go to the mock hospital and demonstrate all the skills you learn. This is done for the first and second semester only. You have to sign up for it and it is first come first serve, well at least it was last year when i signed up. There are only 10 people per skills lab so there are tons of different time slots for it, each day of the week. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Murphy goes to Illinois Masonic and Romba I believe went to Our Lady of Ressurection. The hospitals change every semester but Murphy always goes to Illinois Masonic and Kipnis to St. Josephs.

Yes when you register they will ask you what section you want meaning what teacher and each teacher goes to a certain hospital. They will tell you this info in the beginning before you register. Dont forget to get there early so you will have first dibs. Ms. Preston is a good teacher from what Ive heard, I have two friends that are taking her and love her so you should do whatever is most convenient for you. Second year you dont have a choice at all and will have to go wherever the clinicals are, so take advantage of it in 101 and 102.

Preston went to Holy Cross on the south side last year for 101. There is no hospital in Evanston that Truman goes to. Kipnis goes to St. Josephs which is on lake shore drive and Diversey.

How many of your schools require a pharmacology class?
I am in an ADN program with the City Colleges of Chicago and they do not require Pharm! It is an optional summer course and I am taking it over the summer, I figured it couldnt hurt. I must admit though, I am very scared based on all of the posts about how horrific it is!

You can look at the schedule online for Nursing 101 Im not sure when classes are next semester, it was 8-950 mon and wednesday for me. The two books I suggested are not required and not in the packet. They are supplementary books that everyone has but need to be purchased from Amazon.com or elsewhere. If you have financial aid you have to go to the financial aid office Im not sure about that, I have to pay for my classes on my credit card so I had to pay the same day. In regards to orientation, I arrived at about 8 I think and was the first person there. I think if you get there an hour or so early you will be fine, just sit outside the room and read a book or something, well worth the wait.

Yes I think that they have a good program however it is extremely disorganized and they have no respect for your time in terms of changing things last minute etc. I have only had two instructors so far, one for 101 and one for 102 and they were two completely different experiences. The teacher I took for 101, Mrs. Kipnis is the best teacher in the world! I absolutely adore her, please take her if you can you wont regret it. However, the teacher that I currently have is Mrs. Murphy whom leaves much to be desired. I do not recommend her in the least as she is completely unhelpful and refises to answer questions, does not teach, only reads from handouts. If you selected day section you will be in the day section. It is only one clinical day for the first year either tuesday or thursday from 7-1 and class monday and wednesday for 2 hours. I bought all my books in advance cause I was so excited but I would suggest just buying the package from the school. They have a package of all required books that is about 1000 dollars. I bought a crap load of books I dont even need and access codes that they just give you anyway at school, super mad about that. So if you want to buy the books seperately I would just buy them as you use them, you will really only need the fundamentals book, the pharmacology book and a couple others for 101. I have about 35 books total I think, I recommend getting Fundamentals Success which is a great book filled with practice questions on nursing content. I used this to study for tests in 101 and soem of the questions from the book were actually on the tests! I also highly recommend Saunders NCLEX review, the blue book, it is an excellent resource and all of my friends have it as well. I dont think that you need to take the Pharm class now at all! I am taking it to keep my head in the game so to speak because next year is going to be really challenging. Pharm 103 is calculations and Pharm 104 is actual pharmacology and is taught by Mr. Worms who is the Med Surg second year teacher, I think it would be very helpful to get to know him before entering second year but taking it now couldnt hurt either. I have a friend that took it the summer before school started, but I dont think it matters. I have maybe learned 10 drugs this whole first year! You will be fine. Oh and last semester I was at St. Josephs hospital and this semester I am at Illinois Masonic. Next year I am at Illinois Masonic again, St. Marys and Chicago Reed I think. There are tons of hospitals that Truman works with. You get to pick the hospital based on the teacher you choose, like if you pick Ms. Kipnis you will be at St. Joes. By the way, show up for orientation early, you register for 101 in the order you arrived that day! I was the first person there because I wanted to take Ms. Kipnis and was worried she would fill up fast! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Truman is going exceptionally well. I can answer any questions you have, and in regards to the Pharmacology class it is Pharm 104 that they want the nursing students to take. I am taking it over the summer, it is from 8-1050 on Wednesdays.

nursing(RN or BSN) school in IL that has a high acceptance rate
Just to clarify, there is absolutely no waitlist at any of the city colleges of Chicago. None of the RN programs at any of the city colleges of Chicago have a wait list. If you do not get in, you have to reapply the next year. They do not keep your application. I decided that I wanted to be a nurse, took all the pre-reqs and applied. I found out I got in a couple months later. Im just trying to help the original poster and make sure that they have the correct information. In addition, the school that I attend accepts 180 students each fall.

nursing(RN or BSN) school in IL that has a high acceptance rate
Any of the City colleges of Chicago are super easy to get into. I have a friend that had the lowest required GPA 2.7 I think and only got C's in the pre reqs as well as a very low score on the compass test(too low for admission to the program, she had to take a remedial reading class over the summer to be allowed entry) and she got in to all the schools she applied to including Truman, Malcolm X and Daley. She currently is in the nursing program with me at Truman. I applied to all of those schools as well and was excepted to all of them too. I on the other hand received A's in all of my pre reqs.

Anyone know any schools without insane wait lists?
There are no wait lists at any of the city colleges for ADN programs in Chicago!! I applied at all 4 of the city colleges that have RN programs here and got in first try, to all of them! Just a thought...
