  1. Thank you all for your responses. I think it would make a whole lot more sense to break it up more (this is a 4 cr class) or to study diabetes, and diabetes drugs, study the heart study heart drugs. At least that would make it more applicable! We've been told to study by classification. I am struggling with that method.
  2. I'm struggling through my pharmacology class and I have heard not all schools require it. How many of you are required to take it as part of your course matrix? How did you get through it? I study by classification, and its just not clicking.
  3. I love the idea of having a "do-it-yourself" ceremony and banquet. I am thinking way ahead, but if my school doesn't put one on, I think it would be a wonderful idea to invite everyone to a restaurant, buy some sort of commemorative pin, and say the oath! I don't think it is as degrading to women as it is to men! I'm sure you can rile some sort of commaraderie and YES, it will be special to everyone who attends. Dutch treat, of course, but shouldn't you do something special to mark the occasion of all the hard work you've done? I think so.
  4. Nursing 101 We are learning the history of nursing, culture and diversity, nursing practice acts (legislation and laws), HIPAA, and we are beginning to learn how to create care plans. Those are the basics.
  5. I once took 24 credits IN THE SUMMER, working full time, so I know how you feel. Do you work, too? Take those study guides and use the index of the book to look things up quick. That's about all I can tell you...hopefully your other classes aren't so time consuming!
  6. Myelofibrosis. My Dad just died of it this past spring. Pretty rare. If you need to know anything about it, just ask by pm. I am pretty well schooled on it. Diagnosed March 5, died 7 weeks later...
  7. They might allow you to use paper napkins, but then again, they are expensive. DO NOT bring a dishtowel from home! That would be against health dept rules. Perhaps they have some cloth napkins? I've seen servers carry out plates using those, but then if they get dirty, you'll need to replace it, so find yourself a big stash. Gosh, I feel for you, those plates can be very hot! Maybe you should try another place of employment if you can't find a solution. I waitressed for years, but they didn't heat up the plates, and we could use trays. Also, you will get used to it. It might take two weeks or so, but your hands need to toughen up. Don't put on moisturizer.
  8. Sorry, the title caught my eye, I have to respond, but I will warn you, I'm a woman. Your wife is feeling insecure because of the baby, in my opinion. Her hormones haven't settled down yet from pregnancy and childbirth. All you can do is reassure her by making her feel great. She thinks you're going to find someone better because the women in your class are gaining knowledge. She might be feeling insecure about her own level of intelligence, if you will. Combine that with the fact that YOU are also getting smarter and it's a punch in the gut to her. You might want to bring up that you love her the way she is and thank her for having that baby! And tell her she's a good momma.:redbeathe
  9. How was orientation? They gave us 9 books! A huge stack!
  10. I'm game. But hey, isn't that what we are already doing here on allnurses.com? How will your blog be different? I hate to rain on your parade, but I'm just sayin'.
  11. Hi Peggy, Congrats on starting NS next week! From what I have been told, the first class of nurses from ITT will graduate in Dec, so how can they have a low success rate? I think whoever told you that at the hospital you work at, must be ill-informed!
  12. Believe me, you are not alone! Yes, I can fall asleep in an instant while reading! Many people gave you some good suggestions. I like coffee, no, make that LOVE coffee, so drinking it 24/7 is never a problem for me. Reading out loud was one suggestion someone else gave you, and it is very useful at times when no one is around! I use it! Sometimes even singing what you read to the radio in the background works wonders, too! :chuckle
  13. Great thread! Here's my info Name: Jo Job: Administrative support. I figure I have been at this job 17 years. I have been loyal to a fault and invisible as "just the secretary." My job is so dead-end. There is NO PLACE for me to go. So I want to go to NS and become "just a nurse." I can do that for another 17-20 years, right? God willing I can. Family/support system: husband, 3 beautiful and intelligent and wonderful daughters, and my mom who lives very close nearby (within a mile. She retired at the beginning of the year and is always avail to pick up the girls, take them here or there, or just get them out of the house for a while so I can study, or nap!) My two oldest are in high school and my youngest is in elementary. A little about your program: I start September 8! Orientation is next Wednesday! I'm getting excited now. I'm going to ITT Tech. The prereqs are rolled into the program. I'll be in the first class in Michigan and feel so honored to be in the initial class. I don't mind being a guinea pig. I have a feeling they are going to do everything they can to make sure we pass. Otherwise, it will look bad on them, don't you think? I loved the suggestion of making a game out of cleaning with the kids. I use my crockpot alot when I'm in school. My kids are old enough to do some things for themselves and they all have a job/chore to handle. They can do laundry, although they don't always dry things right away or take things out of the dryer. Don't let naysayers get you down! They are probably just envious they can't go to NS! It can be done. We won't be the only ones who have ever gone down this trail. Many others before us have raised kids, kept house, satisfied their spouse (or not), and gone to NS! After us, the same gig. Many more will pull it off too! I'll be checking this thread regularly!
