Called the Nurse Manager

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I called the nurse manager this morning, I didn't expect her to answer but she did (!!!!) so I had to quickly gather myself and asked her about an update on my application. She said that HR should be contact me and to look on the Montefiore website (whats on the web?) What am I looking for she didn't say and she seemed as if she was in a rush. Im starting to think I didn't get it because wouldn't she have given me a better answer than that?

You asked in a forum designated for nurses; we are bound to ask additional questions; we assess; it a much larger "skill" we possess.

Thanks hun, but I needed an answer for a specific question that's all. Everything else I did not need advice for because I was going to do what I wanted regardless.

Of course; however is the nature of the Internet; you can't stop forums from developing into a mind if it's own; you never know what you may need to take from them as well...

 Few points: 1.You may not get your "dream" job; and it may take you a few years to get said dream job; psych will give you a great foundation when you do get that job; many people have mental health issues and illness; it doesn't not go away when they are in the hospital I'm sure you know that, however, just giving a gentle reminder. 2. IV skills are "tasky" and are the easiest to develop; the real nursing "skills" one must develop in becoming and expert nurse is assessment, nursing judgement and therapeutic communication; those skills can be honed successfully in psych, as well as psych can be an excellent building block unto other specialities in nursing. As long as I have been in nursing; utilizing those therapeutic nursing tips I learned from mental health nursing have been very beneficial or pts, their families, as well as peers. ;) OK, as much as your father wants to help you, I am sure you per your posts you want to develop a great professional pattern, especially in nursing; nursing is a very "small world"; and staying that you would quit a job after two weeks promoted posters to advise you against doing this, because of this; best to heed the information at hand; it's worth considering listen to it; we know you are not stupid; inexperienced perhaps, but far from stupid.[/quote']

I've learned enough about and have taken it into consideration. At the end of the day if I leave the job in 2 weeks or a few months I just won't add it on my resume so it will not matter to employers looking at my work history. And when I land the job I want it really will not matter. But I will keep you all updated on my INTERVIEW to OFFER dilemma.

So much attitude in one so young!:sarcastic: (I'm assuming youth since parental units are still influencing decisions.)

I still do not understand your initial statement that the HR person told you to check the website, then subsequently you said there IS no website??

Yes and I have taken into consideration everything that was posted. And still came to the conclusion that if I am stuck at the psych place I would really hate it and be unhappy I'm sure of it. A DON there already quit because a patient attacked her. That's why I'm hoping if I do have to work there to make money while I'm waiting, I will do that and be very cautious for however long I am there. But I don't want to make it a permanent thing (who wants to feel unsafe and walking on egg shells in a place they work at?). That's how I felt on those psych clinical rotations. I just want my dream job so I will continue to go on interviews and work while waiting to hear back from the place I recently interviewed at.

Attitude? No just a normal reaction from a person who feels attacked by all these opinions and it wasn't for the question I wanted the answer to. I wouldn't call it influenced because I can say hell no and that will be that. But my parents are mostly putting their two cents in because they are worried about a money situation (mine). So I am considering taking the job I don't want to make money while also interviewing at other places and keeping my options open. That's pretty much it. I think people are just shocked that I said I will leave in 2 weeks if it comes to that, but it is what it is. Btw if I get the job I'm waiting to hear from I plan on staying a very long time (so it's not a pattern of job hopping in case you were wondering). It is a great place and the RNs on that floor are pretty awesome.

@rugbyprincess - AN is a very large site. We have many varied opinions. Hopefully one of these (or more) has struck a cord and provided the feedback you desire.

Best wishes

I know, thank you.

Why waste time with the psych job if you plan on jumping ship as soon as your dream job becomes available? You are wasting peoples time. HR, the nurse training you, etc. just sit home, constantly check your emails, and wait.

People like you give some of us new grads a bad name. They think a lot of us will just leave when something better comes along. That's why a lot are skeptical on hiring us.

Take any job given to you as a learning opportunity. I've applied places I would never want to work. Jail, psych centers, etc. it gets me in the door and something on my resume. Plus you never know what you can learn.

A lot of my classmates said the nursing home is note for them. But at clinicals we had a lot of 'young' people there for rehabilitation purposes. We did IV's, trach care, etc that you would think could only be in a hospital.

Don't be so offend honey. If you look all over this website leaving jobs for a better one is very common. And Rehab and Psych are two very different jobs. If you are the type of person who will stick anything out for a year or so, then do that. You and I are two different people so therefore your judgement is not needed. My name on my resume and license, not yours.

I know this is an old thread but surprised no one caught this. Employers do not simply look at your resume for your job history. Your job history is tied to your social security number. Any legitimate job that you've held will pop on a background check. Omitting a job from your resume, only to have it found on the background check, is probably an even bigger black mark than having a job that you only worked for two weeks on your resume. Because that's lying.
