California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?

U.S.A. California

Published

Greetings.

This is my story- I graduated from Nursing School in May 2008 (ADN) and passed my boards in October 2008.

I live north of San Fran and have yet to find a New Grad Program. I've been on Allnurses since last summer when I started studying to pass the boards. I used Allnurses especially the "random facts" thread which helped me pass the boards with flying colors. My family is ready to move out of the area because there is no new grad program avail out here.

I have spent hours online looking for New Grad positions in Washington State, Southern Ca, New Mexico, and Ashville NC. These are the areas, along with the Bay Area that I am interested in. I am looking to see if someone would like to buddy up or we can all help continue this thread and we can help search together for all the possible positions in the areas mentioned above or just in California. I have found that the work done alone is not enough or that I have just missed an application date, or I didn't know that blank blank just hired for the season.

The random facts thread was so hot because it was encompassing info about one main event with up to the minute info. Maybe a thread like "California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?"- and it would include SNF's and whatever we can think of that a new nurse can do in the community, would be like the "random facts" thread. I'm sure I will hear from an Allnurses thread monitor about if this is OK or not.

At this point I am just trying to be creative and use the best resource online, which to me has been this sight.

I hope to hear from you soon.

How do I go about applying?

Well, I didn't apply (because I haven't taken the NCLEX-RN yet - just got the eligibility letter from the CA BRN) so I'm not exactly sure how. But you go to the Scripps website (http://www.scripps.org), then you click "Careers" on the top right of the screen. A new page will appear; click "Search Jobs" on the bar on the left. Then yet another page will appear; click "Search Openings". Choose "Registered Nursing" as the job category (don't mind about the other options) and click search. It'll be the first job to appear. It says "Registered Nurse/ICU Training Program". Click the requisition ID number and it'll take you to the details about the job (list of qualifications required, etc.). Then click "Apply to Job". Scripps does require you to sign up for an account, though. If you don't have one, you can make one. :)

I have no idea what comes next after that (because I haven't signed up for an account yet :p) but I hope that helps.

UC Davis currently has a hiring freeze. :(

Where/when did you hear that? I was just hired in one of the new grad positions in the NICU. I got the call offering me the job last Monday. I think they have temp. freezes, then lift them periodically for a few positions. I could be wrong though, just my guess. Since they just posted a position last week, I would guess they would fill that position.

GOOD LUCK to all of you!!!! I know how heartbreaking this whole process is. It took me 9 months to finally find a job, I was really about to give up.

Try to keep up a positive attitude, and know that it will all work out some way. It has to!

Again, good luck!!!!

heatherp-

Congratulations on the job! I am just starting a job search now and wondering what I can do in the meantime to maintain my skills from school while I search. What did you do during your 9 months of searching?

By the way, Methodist Hospital in Arcadia has a new grad program which will be starting on sept. I just applied online.

Hi gwafuh_rn, can you post the link of methodist hospital in arcadia? I am interested but I can't find their website specifically in arcadia. Are you thinking about changing jobs from Monrovia Memorial Hospital?

thank you!!

EDIT: oooops i found the link. =)

Congratulations on the job! I am just starting a job search now and wondering what I can do in the meantime to maintain my skills from school while I search. What did you do during your 9 months of searching?

The things that I did between graduation and find a job were:

1. I volunteered (in the NICU, which helped in landing a NICU job)

2. I took PALS and ACLS (I had taken NRP before my preceptorship)

3. Applied to ANY and EVERY RN job that would accept a new grad, regardless of the unit. With each application I fine tuned my cover letter and resume.

4. Tried to keep up a good attitude. That was often hard, but I tried :)

That's about it. Just keep keepin' on...

35/hr in a snf?!!! hmmm!!!!

I'm interested what snf is this?

Hi Oranges3420. I was wondering if there was some way to contact you and ask you more about your SNF job. I didn't know to how to send a private message. I think I need to at least make 15 posts before I can PM somebody.

Hi Dmeneses,

1. I just walked into the SNF and pretty much was hired - they were desperate for an RN at the time (I was lucky). I already passed the NCLEX and don't think they would have hired me otherwise.

2. How many WEEKS training? ha ha ha!!!! I trained for 6 or 7 days and was on my own. Needless to say, I am ALWAYS asking questions of the other nurses.

3. I care for about 24-27 patients - but it varies week to week depending on the census.

4. I work 8 hour shifts but I'm rarely there for only 8 hours. I frequently stay over by 30 minutes to 2 hours.

5. When I'm there (pm shift), I am the only RN for the entire facility after 5pm. If the poop hits the fan, I am considered the "supervisor" (kind of a joke since I don't know ALOT of the procedures yet). The LVNs snicker about that part because some of them have been there for 7-10 years. Don't get me wrong, though. They are awesome nurses and help me out tremendously.

I must be honest: I'm not the biggest fan of SNF but here's the deal: 1.it's a pay check, 2. it helps you develop communication skills w/patients, doctors, and families, 3. you become famililar with medications (lots and lots!), and 4. your time management and organizational skills will improve like crazy.

If the hospital thing doesn't pan out - as it hasn't for many of us, don't be afraid of SNF. It still is a job and you are putting your license to use! If you like working with older adults, it's great too. They can be a total riot and make my day! Good luck!

Hey there,

Congrats on the job:cheers:

I have applied for all 4 of the recent new grad jobs at UCDavis and just talked to the recruiting office. Very nice, btw. Anyway, I was just wondering what you could tell me about their hiring process; interviews etcetc. I graduated in May and have had only 1 screening interview and they wanted only new grads that lived within 30 miles of the hospital; I live further away, interesting screening tool:smackingf.

Thanks for anything you could offer. Good luck

Well, it took awhile before they contacted me. I applied to two positions the same day, and watched the little updates and saw that position get filled while the NICU one still just said resumes had been sent to the managers. I pretty much had given up on the position, when all the sudden I got a phone call to set up an interview. WOO HOO! That was Friday July 3. Oh, and it was the department's assistant manager who called me.

Went in to the interview the next Wednesday (though it could have been scheduled for Mon or Tues, but I chose Wed.) They told me that it would be 2-3 weeks before I'd hear anything. Almost 3 weeks later (Monday), I got the call for the job offer. I went in on Friday to sign papers and have my physical. Orientation starts on the 17th of Aug. LONG process, but worth it! : )

I have a feeling that each department works a little different. They did not say ANYTHING to me about living more than 30 min away...'cause I live 2 hours away! I'm POSITIVE it helped though that I told them that my hubby could transfer his job to Sac, and that my best friend lives near there. I also told them I'd be renting an apartment in Sac for my work nights until my hubby's transfer happens.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I saw a position online today that says "student nurse" is that what you applied for or did it actually say "new grad"?

I had applied online for a position about a month ago, I called to follow up and it's kinda weird that someone from HR told me they don't have a new grad program. I'm sure I was given the wrong info.

Good luck to you!:):)
