Greetings.
This is my story- I graduated from Nursing School in May 2008 (ADN) and passed my boards in October 2008.
I live north of San Fran and have yet to find a New Grad Program. I've been on Allnurses since last summer when I started studying to pass the boards. I used Allnurses especially the "random facts" thread which helped me pass the boards with flying colors. My family is ready to move out of the area because there is no new grad program avail out here.
I have spent hours online looking for New Grad positions in Washington State, Southern Ca, New Mexico, and Ashville NC. These are the areas, along with the Bay Area that I am interested in. I am looking to see if someone would like to buddy up or we can all help continue this thread and we can help search together for all the possible positions in the areas mentioned above or just in California. I have found that the work done alone is not enough or that I have just missed an application date, or I didn't know that blank blank just hired for the season.
The random facts thread was so hot because it was encompassing info about one main event with up to the minute info. Maybe a thread like "California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?"- and it would include SNF's and whatever we can think of that a new nurse can do in the community, would be like the "random facts" thread. I'm sure I will hear from an Allnurses thread monitor about if this is OK or not.
At this point I am just trying to be creative and use the best resource online, which to me has been this sight.
I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi starburz,
I applied to this program, but have not heard anything. The nurse recruiter won't be back till Monday but I heard through the grapevine that they'll start calling people next week. Let's just hope that our phone rings for the good news that we've been patiently waiting for.
Good luck! Unfortunately, I had received an email from them awhile ago saying I didn't have my nursing license (which was not the case), so they rejected my application. I was positive I had added my license information, but when I looked, it wasn't there. Although I thought it was weird my info wasn't there, I could've faxed them my stuff but I decided not to continue my app there as I've decided I really rather stay in Southern California, unless UC Davis calls.
My mom has a lot of clients that are nurses. They tell her they can't believe I can't find a job yet! *angry face* So I get even more flack from my mom. I just got rejected from 4 job positions just this week. It sucks!
you know what i hate even more?!?!?! when people tell me about the nursing shortage in california. oh really?! there's a nursing shortage? because there's apparently a job shortage too. then i have to explain how there's a shortage for experienced nurses, and an overflow of new grads. i also hate when i go in to apply for an RN job and they ask if i'm a new grad. Yes, but i'm also an RN with tons of important skills!
Your stories all make me worry so much I feel pretty unmotivated to finish school and rack up even more debt!!
I am due to graduate in June 2010 and plan to move to California to be near my fiance. The market is flooded in my hometown, and its a big city. We have 1500 graduates coming out of 7 schools every year, and no one is hiring here locally, at least not new grads. I have heard of a few people with a year or more of experience getting hired on but it seems rare. There are folks who graduated in 2008 who still don't have jobs, so the waiting list just gets longer and longer.
I have to move, not only to be with my partner but also to find work elsewhere. Ukiah is my best option, but thats still an hour and a half commute each way from where I'll be living.
My question is to all those with financial aid loans who can't find jobs...we have 6 months after graduation before we have to start repayment...so what are you living on and how are you paying back your loans if you aren't working? is there some govt. deferrment program for new grad nurses who can't find work?? i doubt it. I suppose as long as you stay in school part time, you defer your loans so it makes sense to continue on for the BSN while you're waiting for the economy or the market to recover and jobs to open...who knows how long that will take, if ever, and in the meantiime you are just racking up debt for a job that may never become available.
I'm starting to believe that the "nursing shortage" they keep talking about is a joke, and a way for the govt and nursing schools to make money, they are pumping out new nurses like sausages but there is nothing for them to do and no where to go once they finish. Yet they still have to repay. Where is that money going to come from?? I'm starting to feel the pressure and heavy burden of the debt I have accrued so far. I got lots of scholarships but still had to take out loans.
Its hard to stay motivated to finish the last year of a tough program with nothing positive or hopeful on the horizon. I feel like I'm wasting my time, energy and money to get trained for a job that doesn't exist.
Does anyone have any hopeful words or advice about loan repayment?? how are you repaying your loans?
thanks!
Hate to say it, but it's really a networking game around here in NoCal. The only responses I have received have been "through the grapevine". I feel like all this emailing nonsense is such a waste of time. Funny story. I started volunteering 1 day/week at a local hospital...took months to even score that...lol. One day, I saw a woman who looked familiar to me, board the hospital shuttle bus. She was from my gym. The next time I saw her, I mentioned how I was a new nurse having a tough time...yadda yadda yadda. She mentions that she works there, her title...Director of Something and that she'll pass my resume on if I drop by. Weeks past before I actually get it together...too busy answering stupid ads that I'm convinced no one bothers to read anyway and feeling sorry for myself. Finally, the other day, I decide to hunt her down. I catch her having lunch (opps) with a couple of people. We chat briefly and she emails me a couple hours later. Seems the person she was eating with was the Director of Nurse Recruitment...double ooppss! I figure if they eat together, they must be pretty good friends, no? Anyway, she said I should hear from the Recruiter once she returns from vaca. You mean it's that easy? I was ready to pack up and move and now I may actually get to stay...fingers crossed. My friend got hired by them and per diem afternoons start at $57/hr. Who needs insurance, sign me up so I can start paying back my loans!
So the moral of the story is don't give up, network like crazy (was recently in hospital visiting a friend and took the opp. to get a business card and email a resume anyway...not hiring...lol). take classes and VOLUNTEER. It gives me time to study, learn things, shadow, just be in the hospital, look for jobs and is a resume builder. I could have stayed at home complaining and never would have known that the woman I stand next to in dance class is friends with a potential hirer!
Another question:
If I graduate in my home state but am moving to CA right after graduation, does it make sense to take my NCLEX there, instead of here? Is there a fee for moving your license from one state to another, and if so how much? Other issues involved? For example can CA refuse to give me my license if I got it in another state? It seems easier to just take it in CA, but if I went to school elsewhere is that even an option?
thanks!

If I'm correct, you posted getting in a hospital as a volunteer and had taken your ACLS/PALS? I've been thinking of you and hoped something like this happened to you! great critical thinking girl! he he I got a job too! not with a pay as great as yours, but I have a job! :) Thank my heavenly father!!!!!!!!!!! I actually have two; 1 is a temp. job with mollen immunizations and the other one is a fulltime job at a med/surg dept. I had been applying since April with zero feedback, nada! I feel everyones pain and know it's not easy terrain out there. I hope this gets easier soon. I just emailed the heart association, I'm trying to get all the ACLS/PALS reading done via online and get skills done at the local fire dept., who knows? But I'll get it done! Another thing that's in my head is getting my forensic licensure completed online through UCR and my SANE license...how cool is that!?
it's expensive, but I have to do it to broaden my career...I can always make small payments...
Congrats on your new job break! Enjoy it and may you have many more positive adventures!

Hello traveler2B, I lived in Utah and took NCLEX in Las Vegas NV to have my license in CA. It's so easy! When you register for NCLEX you have to make sure all your documentation is in the State of CA through CA Board of Nursing (Check site) and then register for pearson when you are approved to sit for testing! you would get an ATT (authorization to test) email and then you call to set up date and location where you want to test! be ready for testing cause it happens reallly quick. I did everything in 1 day after being authorized to test by the State of CA. After you get your ATT you can do everything else via online or phone. I did it over the phone, wanted to make sure someone real was on the other end! I could not believe my ears! hahahahaha good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
