California's 2011 New Grad Program

U.S.A. California

Published

When I saw that Torrence Memorial had closed their applications to their New Grad program starting in March 2011 I realized we needed a new grad 2011 thread! The 2010 thread was a great place to ask questions and get answers about upcoming new grad opportunities. So let's make this thread the same. :)

First off, When did you graduate?

Any old new grads out there? How long have you been looking for a job?

Specializes in Telemetry.

oh ok....so you didn't have to wait for that long :)

Did you already took the exam? Or did they schedule for an interview?

Harbor is a teaching hospital with lots of residents and students and I just loved the environment. Being a county hospitals they have lots of patients with no insurance, and patients with high acuity who would be in the ICU at most other hospitals. The ER is the main trauma center for the South Bay area and it's just crazy, you see and learn a lot.

The only thing I don't like it that on the regular floors, they only have 8hrs shifts, and they're still paper charting no computers yet :D

And of course, the nurses are overworked and very very busy.......but again a great place to learn and get some valuable experience.

Good luck on your interview, and please let me know how it goes.......I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I had my interview with LA County on Monday and they said I should receive a letter within 2-3 weeks to let me know if I passed the interview.

After that she said I can call the various county hospitals to see if they are hiring and if so then I can schedule an interview with the unit manager.

I believe its the exam but not sure. I got an appointment to go into the nurse recruiting office and all they told me was to bring a copy of my license, certs and contact info on one reference. Thanks for the best wishes. I was reading on another thread that it takes super long to actually get the job, but it may be a good oppertunity.

Do you mind sharing what the interview consisted of? Did they ask you scenario questions, math, or was it more about your education and training in nursing school?

Thanks.

dienne: I signed a form stating I wouldn't reveal the questions. But I would focus on scenario questions and what you learned in nursing school.

Hello, I actually recently called the recruiter and they said they're going to be posting their positions for new grads either at the end of this month or in April

Well these are the places that offer versant programs. As for them accepting 2009 graduates, I am not sure about that. Good luck

Versant is an outside company that helps hospitals train new graduate nurses. Other hospitals choose to do their own training with resources in-house.

Being a graduate from 2009 unfortunately will leave you ineligible to apply to most new graduate programs in California; generally its 1 year from graduation with more and more places requiring 6 months from graduation as a way to cut down on applications.

I would suggest calling recruiters directly and explaining your situation to sort through the list of programs you are eligible for.
