Just graduated Dec. 2010 and just got my license 2 weeks ago so haven't really applied anywhere yet.

I know Sharp Memorial has a program starting in April and will be accepting apps next month.

I've been talking to a few new grads and most of them who have jobs were looking for about a year :uhoh3: Hopefully things start getting better, I don't want to have to move from San Diego, but I just might have to. I've "heard" things are better in LA and OC area, anyone know if that's true??

I graduated in May 2010 but already had a job as an LVN. :) I feel so lucky to be working as an RN! I'm also in San Diego! Yeah I heard about Sharp's program. By summer this year I will have one year experience as an RN and no longer qualify for the new grad programs. I just thought I would start this thread to help others. :heartbeat

Sharp starts in July, not April. And things are definitely not better in LA and OC! I've been looking there too since I graduated at the end of July... :crying2:

Hi everyone, im newly passed RN..im an international graduate from the Philippines. I graduated last March 2009... i'm here now in LA, finding job as well..

but before that, im having a hard time constructing my resume and cover letter. they said it should be powerful so that you can sell urself immediately to the employer.. please help me...

and i have a question, new grad programs require recommendation letters from the clinical instructor in school u attended to.. since i graduated last 2009 and im already here in the US, can i ask recommendation letter to my CI that is no longer connected with my school now?

I can only tell new grads to be open and look everywhere in the state. Don't limit yourself by staying local. One grad from my class moved halfway across the state and now he has the best job ever! We are all in envy.

It seems that So Cal and the Bay Area are very stiff competition. Perhaps the Central Valley or way up in the Northern part of the state might hold better opportunities for New Grads.

No, I dont think that it is true. Some people who graduated a year before me are still not working. I heard Texas is the place to go if you want to get hired right away. I am planning on moving there this summer if I am not working by then.

Congrats for becoming an RN :)

Now for some resume and cover letter help, using in a search box typing "cover letter help for nurses" or "resume help for nurses" will give you a whole bunch of links for good examples of cover letters and resumes. The links below are also good examples

As for the recommendation letters, I think as long as you have a recommendation letter from a clinical instructor who makes you shine (i.e. lists your attributes and why you would be an asset to an employer based on their experience with you), then that will be good enough. Also, having a recommendation letter from a person connected to your most recent school would be helpful too to employers, so they can see how you are in the present.

When does the program start? Late Summer 2011

How long is the residency? 18 weeks

What does the residency consist of? One class day per week, two 12-hour clinical days per week.

Is the residency a paid position? All residents are hired into a specific department. Wages are based on nursing career ladder.

Do I get benefits? As a full-time employee residents are eligible for benefits.

Is there a commitment after the residency? Yes, there is a minimum two year commitment upon completion of the residency.

Can I have prior experience as a RN? Yes, if the experience is minimal and not in acute care.

Does your organization offer sponsorships? Not at this time.

Is tuition reimbursement available? UVMC offers tuition reimbursement for continuing education after one year of full-time employment.
