California and licensure for both PN and RN

Published

we are seeing more and more posts regarding california and getting results.

for pn it takes on average 4 weeks to get your results, until you get your results via snail mail and pay for your license you will not see your name on the website and will not have a license issued. sometimes it may take longer to get your results if there has been a large influx of applications and test takers. if you find you have to contact them because you haven't heard anything they will usually indicate on what date they are processing.

for rn you will only have a license issued if you have a ssn and have given it to the brn. if you have no ssn then you will not see your name on the brn website. if you inform them you have a ssn after your application is sent in or after you have taken the nclex then give them a few days to up date their files on you. it takes approx 3-10 days to get your results online (as long as you meet requirements and have a completed file) although can take longer. do not ring them until at least 2 weeks has gone passed as the more people ring means a delay on updating yours/others file. majority of times you do not hear anything is due to a incomplete file as california allows you to sit nclex in most cases with a incomplete file, they will not release your results until it is complete. we have had members contact brn to find that there is a problems with their fingerprints or their transcripts haven't arrived so can easily be something simple enough to sort out.

any questions regarding california please post here

if you are a foreign trained nurse and applied to california and have no ssn then you will not see your name on the website and if you do not provide a ssn within the 3 years then your file is destroyed which does include your nclex results. if you are caught up in retrogression and your 3 years are nearly up then we suggest you apply to another state for licensure by exam and arrange with ca to forward your nclex results. you will still have to meet the bon requirements for foreign trained nurse so do not leave this to the last minute.

i have a question about re-application for the nclex..i know you can re-take after 45 days but when you get the mail that says you failed, can you send the re-application right away with the re-application fee or have to wait?plz help..thanks

They will not forward anything on to Pearson-Vue for the retest until the 45 days are up.

I would focus on preparing for the retest first before submitting anything. It is usually going to take longer than the 45 days to prepare again for the exam.

The 45 days is the limit because that it the shortest time before all of the questions have been changed out from the time that you previously tested.

i have a question about interim permit to work in california..i am a graduate in the philippines and i dont hold a license in the philippines..am i eligible for interim permit so i can work while reviewing?thanks

You will not qualify for the IP for CA for several reasons. First, once you have written the NCLEX exam, this is no longer an option for you. It was designed to be used only for those that have not written the NCLEX exam. It also expires when one writes the exam for the first time.

Next issue is that CA actually requires that the foreign nurse possess a CGFNS Certificate, meaning that you have taken and passed the CGFNS exam, plus have passed the English exams to be able to meet the requirements for this. If you do not hold a local license, then you do not meet the first qualification for even being granted permission to sit for the CGFNS exam.

Not sure but thought interim permit was only for people who hadn't sat NCLEX before. What does it say on the site, should tell you their requirements

Hi!I'm a new member of allnurses.com.Been reading a lot of post since last week bc I was looking for answers to how I could know if I pass my exam.I took my nclex rn exam last week for the 2nd time and it's been 6 days and still can't find my name @ ca bon.I know I have to wait for 3-10 days bc CA does not participate on quick result based on what I have read in this site. It's just that by now I'm more sure that I failed bc the first time I took the exam last yr I've received the letter after 2 wks and the date on the letter was 6 days after my exam date.Today is my 6th day.I stop at 75, 1 SATA and 1 med dosage.Just can't figure out what happened to me.The last time I stop @ 265 for 5 hrs.I was quite happy thinking that maybe I did good this time but now im not sure anymore.I just can't accept that the computer stop @ 75 this time and maybe I've failed than the last time that it stops @ 265 and failed.

Until you get notification don't assume. Wait for the results. Welcome and good luck

Right, do not assume anything at this point. Almost everybody feels the same way--that is doubts about passing or not passing. I've been there...Good Luck!

why so long for PN?

They have two completely different licensing boards in CA and they do things differently. They also do not have one pay for the license until they pass the exam.

Each state is free to determine how their nursing boards are going to handle things and this is what CA chose. It is also serves the largest population for any one state as well.

i live in texas and i applied for licensure in cali/if ever i pass nclex can i reciprocate my license here in texas?

CA license is only valid for CA.

The NCLEX exam has reciprocity, but not licenses. This means that your exam will be accepted but you are going to need to apply for licensure to Texas and they will have to evaluate your training and see if it meets their requirements. Licenses do not have recrocity.

Not all programs are approved in all states.

so i can still work here in texas/but i dont have to take the nclex exam again right
