CA license with ITIN instead of SSN?

Has anyone been able to get the CA license by using an ITIN number instead of the SSN?

I don't have an SSN (I'm on H4 visa). I gave CA board my ITIN, is that enough to get the actual license and get the NCLEX results displayed on the board license verification website?

not sure about ITIN being used instead of SSN Suzanne is probably the best once to answer this and may be worth posting in the International forum. But are you aware that currently on H4 you are affected by retrogression and not able to adjust your status. Plenty of info in the International forum about it

Hello LR123. I am also here in the US with H4 visa. Just want to ask how did you apply for ITIN. My CALI license will expire Dec of 2009 and I want to have ITIN to get my CALI license. My friends also got their active license by submitting ITIN but they cannot tell me how they got one. Please help me. Thanks. I would appreciate if you could tell me what to submit to IRS for them to issue my an ITIN. Thanks a lot again.

This should answer your questions http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96287,00.html

You do not have a license issued to you if you do not have a SSN# in the first place. What you are speaking of is the letter that you received from the BRN that you passed the exam.

The application actually asks for the SSN#, it does not ask for the ITIN#. Substituting it for the SSN# could actually be considered fraud if one were to get picky about it. If they would accept the ITIN#, then it would list that on the application as well. Just because it is a 9 digit number, it is not the same and should be not used as being that.

It will also create much more of an issue for you if and when you would receive the actual SSN# and then need to submit that to the BRN; how are you going to explain that you substituted the ITIN# when they asked for the SSN#?

I am moving this thread to the International Forum since it is specific to licensure as a foreign nurse and nothing about the NCLEX exams.

There are already quite a few threads on the International Forum as to what to go to be able to maintain your results for the NCLEX exam.

You also need to be aware of the fact that we do not have any visas available, and do not expect any for several years for you to adjust your status to. Chances are quite high that your spouse's H1-B visa will be expired by the time that things possibly open up.

Again, please take the time to do some reading on the International Forum; there is much that you need to be aware of, not just the license part of it.

Best of luck to you.

Even if you got the ITIN, gave it to the CA BRN and got the license, you still can't work on a H4 visa.

I am not asking if I can work with H4 visa. I am just asking if I can have my license by presenting ITIN. I am very much aware that presenting ITIN cannot grant me legal right to work here. I guess you did not get my question well. I have friends here in the US who was able to get their visa by presenting ITIN. This happened not just by accident by I am very sure the CA BON is accepting ITIN in the absence of SSN.

I think you mean license instead of visa because ITIN will not get you a visa.

From the California BON Website

"SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER

Disclosure of your social security number is mandatory. Section 30 of the Business and Professions Code and Public Law 94-455 (42 USCA 405 ©(2)©) authorize collection of your social security number.Your social security number will be used exclusively for tax enforcement purposes, for purposes ofcompliance with any judgment or order for family support in accordance with Section 11350.6 of the

Welfare and Institutions Code, or for verification of licensure or examination status by a licensing orexamination entity which utilizes a national examination where licensure is reciprocal with the requesting

state. If you fail to list your social security number, your application for initial or renewal licensewill not be processed. You will also be reported to the Franchise Tax Board, which may assess a $100

penalty against you. Questions regarding the Franchise Tax Board should be directed to (800) 852-5711."

So no ITIN allowed sorry. If you are legally here to work what is the big deal about giving your SS number?

No need to be cranky - I understood your question very well. I just couldn't see the point of getting a license when you're legally not permitted to use it.

hi! i think this reply is kinda late already. but for everyone's info, you can get ur cali license just with an itin. but let them know it's ur itin (send them the paper irs sent you assigning you the number). your license will be valid for 2 birthdays and will expire the month after ur 2nd birthday.

but, without the ssn, you won't be able to renew your license.

good luck!
