But I'm Pregnant . . . . .

Along the lines of the "But I have little kids . . . . " thread:

One of my co-workers announced her pregnancy this week, stating that she was no longer willing to work weekends or holidays because she's going to be a parent. She also has to have Christmas off because this is going to be her last child-free Christmas. Oh and by the way, she can't take care of anyone with VRE, MRSA, or any other type of isolation. "Yukky wounds" make her nauseous, so she can't take those patients -- in fact, wouldn't it be best to just have her do charge all the time?

We're a large unit and have 1 - 6 nurses pregnant at any given time. Plus there are those who can't travel to interventional radiology, take infected patients, etc. because they're TRYING to get pregnant.

The last nurse to have her baby had to sit in the chair her entire shift "because I'm pregnant," and had orientees to do everything for her. Not the role of I preceptor, I'm thinking!

What's the strangest/most irritating thing you've had a coworker demand because she's pregnant?

Back before my day women carried the baby and plowed the lower 40. Sometimes minus the horse/donkey.

Tell'em to get over it, get moving and be glad their not wearing a saddle.

Dave, who finds that to be a lazy a$$ excuse.

Now i understand the not taking CMV, maybe MRSA patients, etc...cuz that could be hazordous. And i understand the not going to radiology cuz that is hazordous. But all that other crap??? Is she INSANE??? i have 2 kids, have worked pregnant and otherwise, and let me tellyou, just because you are expecting doesn't give you any "special" status. I'd tell her to shove it, that if the patient load is fair, and there's no "physical" reason she can't do things, then she needs to do it. Not to mention, the no weekends, holidays crap....WHATEVER. What does your boss say??? That's crazy!!! I've never heard of anyone bowing down to demands like that. Maybe i need to apply there! :p

When I was pregnant for my daughter I was a full-time college student and my husband and I worked on our house. It was the foundation at the time. (We are building our house ourselves because then there will be no mortgage.) Anyways, everyone kept telling me to just rest. I want to say that my labor was easy and pretty comfortable and I bounced back very soon afterwards. I think that staying active was a huge bonus for my body! How is a woman's body going to handle something as demanding as birth if they sit around and do nothing for 9 months?

We have a relatively new nurse who's almost 8 months pregnant and absolutely MISERABLE. I'm pretty sympathetic---I went through that five times myself---but I think it's time to take maternity leave if you can't answer call lights at least some of the time, and need the PRN nurse to pass all your meds for you. I certainly don't mind helping her out, but I think it's time for her to give it up!

What's she going to do on weekends after she has the kid? "Umm.. hey, could you put this kid back into my body? It's the weekend and I want some time off."

Or the Christmas deal - what's Christmas without the joy of kids? (other than Christ's birth). What family member hasn't felt the fun of shopping for a kid and watching them open something on Christmas morning??

This woman needs a reality check. The world does not stop because you are pregnant.

And btw, you might need to remind this lady that even though her pregnancy is special to her, she's not the first woman to ever have given birth before.:chuckle

i have a question related to this.....i have been pg before but lost it..during the time i was pg..i was literally barfing in my car..all over myself..with no ryhme or reason.... my question is... i know you can take medical leave.... but for how long...the whole pregnance?? and what can you do if you need the money but cant do some of the jobs??? thanks so much since i do plan on becoming preg again one day and fear the nausea is going to be a big one for me again ..thanks xo jenn

Tell me about it...."Do you want to see some pictures of my cutie taking his first poop?" Er.....no? :stone

Jenn... every pregnancy is different. You may or may not be sick the next time.

As far as using pregnancy as an excuse, that's one thing that has always made me mad, and never really worked as an excuse as far as I'm concerned. When I was managing, I always demanded the note, With Explanation, from the OB as to why someone couldn't do the job. I worked 16 hours the day before I had my youngest daughter.

well i'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant and unfortunately the doc has put me off sick for a few weeks cos im not well and i cant carry out my job, i need to rest as i'm a high risk of having complications in my first few weeks, but i have been pregnant 3 times before. I have done my job as a nurse would and havent used my pregnancy as an 'excuse' not to do anything. At the end of the day pregnancy is not an illness.
