is it true that some new grads start at $30 an hour?

i know a lot depends on your location, but if that is true, then

that is pretty impressive!!

My facility in CA starts new grads at a little over $29/hour with a 10% shift differential for night and weekends. The other hospitals in my area pay about the same for new grads.

Most new grads in my area are making about $10 an hour - primarily because most of them are working at Starbucks, Home Depot and Target because hospitals are only hiring experienced nurses.

UC Davis Medical Center (CA) new grads starts at $40.83 (base), yes, forty dollar$...and a very generous retirement plan...I have two friends there.

The Big Lie?

Without a doubt, the main source of frustration experienced by recently graduated and licensed but still unemployed nurses is what could be called "the big lie."In other words, the television commercials that encourage young people to become nurses -- and then abandon them for months (or years) without employment; and the educators who tell them that the associate's degree is perfectly adequate to guarantee employment, that they will have their pick of jobs when they graduate, and that there is plenty of time to get a BSN later on. Who knows whether it is greed, ignorance, or wishful thinking that underlies the fairy tales told to nursing students about their future job prospects? Whatever the motivation, the disillusionment of our new grads is palpable. The jobs they expected after all of their hard work just haven't materialized, and some grads are getting pretty desperate.

Will Work for Experience The strongest motivator for the working population is money, but for some newly licensed registered nurses, getting valuable clinical experience seems to be taking precedence over the paycheck. Without that experience, the financial future of these nurses will remain precarious because they will be unable to find jobs.

"I am willing to take a 50% pay cut or even work for free so I can get the darned experience," said one frustrated new graduate who has been unable to break out of the unending cycle of "no job without experience, and no experience without a job."

She was not alone.....

Specializes in Surgery NP.

I am a new grad in NYC and make $38/hr (base)

SoCal area my starting was $33 + $3 differential. benefits after 30 days.

Specializes in Bariatric surgery, orthopedic surgery..

Cool topic to be able to reply to hahaha. I'm a new grad newly licensed, just got hired this week actually, starting pay is like 24.76 base. If I want to take a nights rotation I will get 20% more than that, so right around 30. So I guess it is possible!! Come to new york, nurses who can't find jobs! Syracuse area hospitals hiring nurses every week!!! Even new grads like half of my graduating class is already employed (we graduated in december!) and we're all 2 year associate RN's. I may have had a little advantage because I already have over half the classes toward bachelor degree completed though.

Specializes in Gynecology.

I work in Eastern Canada (unionized) and as a new grad RN my starting salary was $30.77/hr. Shift differential for nights is $2.33/hr and for weekends is $2.55/hr. However, I am a casual employee and because I do not get benefits, etc, they pay me a casual premium to make up for that which is an extra 20% an hour.
