BSN Job without License

Published

I graduated from nursing school with my BSN in 2013. I have taken the NCLEX 4 times and I have been unsuccessful. Anyone has any ideas as to any careers I can pursue without my license?

I have looked into research but they require a license. I'm considering teaching high school biology, anatomy & physiology, and Health. But I would like something in the Health care field. Any suggestions would help. I also live in Florida.

I've never known of any positions related to healthcare that you could work at your level of education without having your license. You're definitely not the first to ask that question.

I think that's one of the drawbacks of the BSN... it only really applies to nursing for the most part. You could try to get a secondary education cert to teach, but even then schools might want to you have relevant coursework in order to teach as you will be hired as a science teacher, not just for anatomy in many cases. Some schools require an exercise science/kinesiology/health Science degree to teach health. Many times their gym teachers are also their health teachers.

Maybe something like sales for a medical device company. If you live near a large research university they may need someone in research without the license. Perhaps a HR Dept would need someone in health promotion. Play around with the job search sites. Don't be specific and see what pops up. It may give you more ideas of what direction to go in.

Look into jobs that do not require a license: unit secretary positions, phlebotomy technician, EKG monitor technician for telemetry floors, pharmaceutical sales, and medical device sales. However, you will need the RN license if you ever wish to utilize your degree. Good luck.

Have you tried to figure out why you are not passing the test? Maybe work on your anxiety and test strategy first.

I would just figure out why I keep failing and fix that problem vs. finding a few rare jobs that do not require my license, yet utilize my degree.

Without a license, you're basically just a candidate that completed a 4 year degree. You could do lots of entry level positions, but you're not going to find anything in health care. If your only reason for giving up on nursing is NCLEX failure, you'd be better off by examining why the failures keep happening and fixing that problem. One of my coworkers went 10 years without successfully passing her NCLEX. She gave up, but we finally convinced her to try again. She passed the first time. Taking boards is just as much a mind game as it is a test of your knowledge.
