So about a week ago I finally heard back from the job interview I had about three and a half weeks ago. I know that some managers more time than usual to make a decision. I was offered a job on an amazing floor which I gladly accepted. The recruiter asked me if I am BSN grad or about to graduate, I told her I am graduating in December. She wanted to asked the CNO first to approve if I can be hired if I am enrolled in RN-BSN program. Since they are reapplying for their Magnet status I could be hired. So I was offered a job and then cancelled the job offere within two days.
It is so disappointing that I have been a new nurse working for 6 months looking forward to starting a hospital career and just like that it was taken away from me. This makes me want to put all into finishing my BSN, december I can't wait for you to get here fast enough. Anyone else had similar experiences?? thank you for letting me rant...

I just know that many of these hospitals with Magnet (either reapplying or interested in applying for it) are incredibly strict with hiring associates degree nurses. My hospital is Magnet and they have a TON of older nurses who only have their associates and have no interest in getting their BSN (or take forever in getting their BSN. I know some nurses who said they have been working on getting their BSN for around 20 years...)
So they really focus on hiring BSN since thats the best way for them to get their #s up. I know at my hospital they recently hired 16 new nurses. 15 of whom were BSN, and the sole associate degree nurse was previously working at the hospital for about 5 years as an aid and is halfway through a BSN program.
Sorry about your experience, and incredibly bizarre that they would make and then rescind an offer like that.
Thank you for your response and yes I am highly disappointed with this decision and really thinking about a little bit more of an explanation on why the offer and then taking it back after the weekend? this magnet status business is becoming so unfair on so many levels

I have repeatedly commented on this site about how the hospitals in my area do not require a BSN, but they do require a certification in your field. Well, guess what. All of a sudden most of the hospitals around here have changed their websites and are now advertising for BSN or MSN only. Strange to me, anyway, that they are now claiming you must have a BSN, but MSN is "preferred." For bedside med-surg?? So sad, really, since there are a ton of ADN nurses here who have a very good education and lots of experience. Our BSN programs are not preparing their graduates to hit the floor running. We are finding most require a lengthy orientation, and are lacking in basic skills.

In my area, hospitals don't even call back unless you have the BSN or are just about the graduate.

The Mid-Atlantic and New England area has had several pockets of where I see only "BSN, MSN preferred" (yes, for bedside nursing) for about the last 3-5 years now. Interesting that it has spread to Florida as well.

That is the way it is becoming. One hospital system in particular is really strict with that, however their turnover rate is horrible and they are infamous for getting rid of the "residency" nurses that work for 2 years to make way for new residency nurses. What they do is require all residency nurses to reapply for open RN spots after 2 years. So the unit you are on you may not stay if they do not have an open RN role.
My hospital system is starting to snub associate nurses but not my unit. However, they do not do mass hirings as we do not have a residency. So you apply for an RN spot as a new grad you get an actual RN spot.
I'm starting to see NLNAC or CCNE accredited graduates only now and not necessarily BSN in a nearby city so I wonder if that is the next wave.
I think my disappointment is that why put me through an interview and offer the job and then take it back?? my resume says that I will be graduating in Fall 13. During my interview I mentioned to the director that I will graduating in Fall 13 so what happened?? oh well time to move on I will be a BSN nurse soon, who knows by then I will need to MSN nurse to work at a hospital (sarcasm) haha

Well if you told them you were graduating in Fall 2013, you can surely understand why they revoked the job offer when you didn't have your BSN in March of 2014.

2013 or 2014?
total typo I wrote fall 2014 on my resume, my point with the second statement was that the director knew I graduate in the fall but it was the nurse recruiter who offered the job and then took it back because she wasn't sure if I was a BSN grad already, I just think it should have been the first thing she checked before she offered me the job, I never lied about when I will graduate they def dropped the ball on checking my credentials before making the job offer
