Hello,
I am starting the RN program on Monday, 08/20/07. I am wondering if there are any other students here who are attending or have attended. I am interested in some guidance and a study group. I live in Sunrise and go to the Central Campus in Davie.
Please PM me for my email.
thanks.
Yes!! A year and some months in and still counting. I graduate in May 2009. Not a fun ride folks!! Not at all. I am learning a ton though. Central Campus is the campus of champions. It takes alot of studying, time, patience, positivity (GOD), and psychology to make it this far. I am a little nervous about this class (Ortho-Neuro) that I am in though because life is finally taking its toll on me being in this program. Everything you can think of is happening all at once during this horrible economy. For those who spoke of Mrs. ywk, I have heard those stories (lol)..never had her, but i have also heard that she is the best nurse to have if you are dying in the hospital. I have gotten a little side tracked with trying to juggle life, but its all good. So far I have gotten the HCA scholarship, one C (Med Surg 1-nightmare), an A (in pharm..duh) and all B's. I love the OB instructor (maybe because i love OB) because she is the most down to earth. Not very intimidating. Everything she teaches is relevant to what you will do in that field. Loved it!! Good luck to all.
that's awesome that everyone is doing well!!!!!!!!
working as an RN is great, sometimes it has its downs too... the other day one of the other RNs on my floor asked me "what did you do to that patient in room #__?" and I was in shock to hear that she made a complaint against me, and asking if I would be back the following night....... terrible things about me, when I was the most nicest to her and her daughter, even neglected my new admission--which I thought would complaint but didn't---- I washed her daughter, brought her food after the cafeteria was closed, attended to all her needs, only to hear that she "hated" me.
It made me upset, but I know in my heart that I went above and beyond of my job responsibilities---
I thought that once I had my RN next to my name, I would receive respect from patients and their families--but instead I am treated like a maiden.......which actually has inspired me to keep going to school and get my master's degree and maybe be a nurse practicioner or do something else, but I definitely won't be a floor nurse forever.
Can anyone tell me if the name of the book they use for Nursing Process I and II (at North Campus) is called Clinical Nursing skills and Techniques by Perry/Potter, ISBN 9780323028394?? And Fundamentals of Nursing by Perry/Potter ISBN 9780323054270? Also, which book is the first test from? I looked at the bookstore book list, and there are so many books listed for NUR1020 so I'm not really sure what is what.
Anyway, I wanted to get it now and start reading, even though I'm a year away from being in the program. Reading 700 pages isn't my strong suit, so I figured I'd better get a head start on the game.

The first test, which is on about 600 pages of reading, is from both books.
Mrs. Brickman is the Nursing Process teacher on North Campus. She is so organized. Visit her web site at http://webhome.broward.edu/~gbrickma/ There you'll find everything you need to know for your first semester. Look under the calendars link and you'll find the calendar and reading and book lists.

Thanks, I will check it out. To your knowledge, have the books remained the same for a while? I'd hate to get them and then have the books change once I'm in the program.

i'm not too sure but i think the book depends on who is your teacher

I'm not sure, but the fundamentals book recently changed to the 7th edition. So it probably won't change again soon. Since you aren't in the program yet, you may want to consider buying the 6th edition, which is virtually the same. Then, when you enter the program buy the current edition. You can probably find the 6th edition on half.com for a few bucks.

I don't believe this is true for this program. I think the school adopts a textbook for each course. I've meet students from different campuses and the textbooks are all the same. However, the resource material may be different.

HI BumblebeeRn,Did you take most of your prerequisites at Miami Dade? Did you do them online or in person? And if you could give me some tips on which teachers to choose I would appreciate it!
Thanks!
I did all the prereqs at MDC. I did them all in person.
I would definitely recommend 100% to go to the classes offered in the hospitals... they have tons of them all over dade county.
I went all over, to miami heart institute, to doctors hospital etc.
also for other classes that are non-science, you can also go to the "outreach" classes, that are given at elementary, HS and middle schools--- I took my englishes and maths at south miami senior hs. they are all very convenient, parking is awesome-- right next to the buildings, and the teachers are great, they help you out a lot. I got very good grades after I started choosing those classes instead of main campus classes.
-your'e welcome!
thanks, i will check out the 6th edition pricing.

here's the post connected to the above link:
you'll start clinicals a few weeks into the program. you meet in the cafeteria of your assigned hospital. initially, you'll be expected to perform basic am care (bath and make bed) and a health assessment. clinicals for process i and ii are on tuesdays and wed. from 6:30 am until 1 or 2 but most instructors leave a little early. after nursing process, clinicals can be 10 or 12 hours on either tues, wed, or sat. mrs. brickman's website has everything you need to know for the first semester. it may have the summer calendar up now, but she'll probably undate it with fall info soon. here's the link: http://webhome.broward.edu/~gbrickma/
good luck.
