Did anyone already turn in there applications for Fall 2009 @ B.C.? because I am turning mine in next week before the deadline and now I have to wait AGAIN and keep continually looking at my e-mail and the myBC account for the Limited Access Program everyday hopefully I get in THIS TIME being my 3rd time
I finally got a chance to exhale today! :bugeyes:What a week! I'm at South (wusup all my south peeps:w00t:) and for the first time, they split our process class into two seperate groups with two seperate professors. I believe our entire class size is 72. I'm lovin' it so far. The program really requires that you study AND learn a lot on your own. Reading before class definitely helps. Also a course in medical terminolgy is definitely a plus.
I also noticed that this year, the bundle is actually a pretty good buy. So far I've used 3 of the 5 books in there. The other book is the med surg book which will be needed next semester. The only book I think I could have done without that was included is the Diagnostic and Lab Test Reference book, but maybe I'll use it later.
Well off to study...
so would you say that the info is hard to understand or is it just alot of workload...just curious im going to be applying for May 2010 session.
Well seeing that it's just the first week, I don't know if my initial impression of the program will truly reflect how it really it. Also, everyone learns on different levels and some have been exposed to more medical terms, situations, hospitals than others so that may affect how easy you understand what the heck they are talking about.
For me, and I can only speak for myself, I feel that the hardest part is totally rearranging my life to find time to study, and study some more, and study some more. The program is really like working TWO jobs, you "work" during the day in your classes and then you "work" when you go home all night. Finding time to eat has been tough for me. I'm usually so caught up in trying to get my lab hours and assigned readings and homework done that I forget to eat.
The content is not exactly foreign to me because I've worked in many types of health care settings in varying capacities, plus I took a medical terminology class so much of the lingo/language I'm familiar with. Again this is just the first week, and I know that my exposure can only help me so much because nursing is a whole other animal that you will never understand unless you are a nurse.
I studied the math book the entire summer because I had a severe case of math anxiety. I can honestly say it has helped me sooooo much.
Overally, you can only determine how well you will do. You have to study and discipline yourself to read not just once but over and over again. The more you read in advance ("pre-class assigments"), the better off you will be. The program is not designed to break you and make you fail. Don't let the material work you, YOU make the program work FOR YOU. Don't complain, keep a positive attitude, don't ask "well why do we have to do this, and why can't we use that" and you'll be fine.
My process class at North is huge! We have 114 enrolled.
RN2BKD- I'd say the info so far isn't hard to understand but the workload is INSANE! I have over 200 pages to read for my lecture on Monday, and I had at least that much reading for yesterday's lecture.
Also, its a new kind of thinking in nursing school. You have to think critically....no more straight up memorization and regurgitation. The test questions aren't going to be on what you know, but how you apply what you know.
Like my process professor said the first day.....test questions before used to be What color is the sky? A-Green, B-Yellow, C-Blue. In nursing school its The sky is blue, the clouds are white, you are a nurse and what are you going to do about it?
wow thank you guys for all that info....I sometimes get so scared thinking about nursing school, but I know I can do it I live with my parents, no kids,no job...I know I can do this....so im guessing medical terminology would be a great class to take before I start...and what kind of math should I start studying ?
Okay sooooo maybe my initial assessment was off. OKAY A LOT OFF. Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking. The program itself is not designed to make you fail BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE TOUGH SKIN. The emotional pressure from some of the professors is UNREAL and can literally make you second guess yourself or be so nervous that you screw up. I still agree that you need to read read read, but sometime things are very grey. So far I've passed all of my tests but today we lost our first classmate due to failing the clinical lab return demo. We all felt soooooo sad. :bluecry1:It was like we lost our comrade. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't pass. It's like you work soooo hard to get in and you're out in 3 weeks. Thursday is our math test. A lot of people are anxious and there's a lot of pressure to pass the first time so you don't have the stress that comes with taking the test the second and final time.
The ONLY thing that has helped me is PRAYER PRAYER PRAYER. I pray for my professors too that they will be more kind and more loving.
Anywho, I'll keep you guys posted on my progress. Off to bed!
What campus are you at? You don't have Return Demo reattempts? At north campus, if we fail something on our return demo, we have to come back on the reattempt day and do that skill over.
I agree, its a lot of reading, and rereading. So far, most of the instructors are nice.
Good luck to you. I hope things get better at your campus.
