MEN IN NURSING
Hello Folks. Just wanted to chime in. I am graduating in three months. I encountered no discrimination at all in class or during clinicals. In fact, it was quite the contrary. Many nurses on the floor stated they were happy to have us (men) there. Even in class, the instructors were not as tough or intimidating towards us. Even the females noticed that we were treated just a bit better. My class has 54 students of which a third are male. I received a scholarship from one of the top hospitals here in South Florida. So far, being a male in a female-heavy profession has been incredible for me.I have heard some stories that are quite the opposite of mine. As more men go into this profession, things will change. The scales are tipping.

thread was created for those attending Broward College South Campus in January
Hey folks. good luck to you all. I have not been on here in a long time. I am in cardio at South. If anyone needs any help or has questions, let me know. I am set to graduate in May and I remember being in your shoes. It seems overwhelming in process, but you can make it through. If you have questions or need study resources or anything at all, let me know. Take care.

Broward College January 2011
Hey everyone. I have not been on here in a long, long time. I am set to graduate from South Campus in May. I am in Cardio now and passed my first exam (only about 10 out of 54 passed). If there is any assistance I can offer or questions I can answer, let me know. I remember being on here a while ago and I had so many questions. Be ready to study and work hard. I don't want to scare any of you, but many will drop out or not pass. For those who work hard and are determined, you will succeed. It is not the nightmare many make it out to be. I have had some tough times, but overall I loved it. I wish you all luck and again, let me know if I can help. Take care.

Some people are using the sixth edition for class. They say there isn't much of a difference.

I only got one online. I bought all my books at once. Like I said, Some I bought but didn't need til process II. The lab supply bag is 125.00 by itself but you won't need it til process II. I bought the Med-Surg book and you won't need that til process II. Same with Fluid and electrolyte book which is not required, but is very useful in process II. I also bought some of the recommended books. I bought a nursing care plan book which is not required but highly recommendable.

You can find cheaper online like ebay. Just be cautious. I bought one book on ebay and it was lost in the mail. The sender send it and showed me the receipt that it was sent. I ordered it a month before school started and it came a month after school started. I would rather pay a few bucks more and know I have my books. Never be unprepared for class. EVER. There are no excuses like I paid for it on ebay but it got lost. Don't learn the hard way. The instructors like making examples, especially during the first few days of class.

As for the criteria for the scholarship, they do look at your gpa. Also, the dean told us to start volunteering. They look at that. Also they like if you are prior military (which I am).

The first semester is the most expensive. The tuition, if I recall correctly was about 1400.00. I spent about 1000 on books and supplies, although some I didn't need til process II. Then there is miscellaneous stuff like your physical, immunizations or titers, uniforms, cost of background check, etc. It all adds up. I spent a little over 3000 at least. I just registered for Jan. The tuition was 1079.00.

Hey everyone. I just wanted to chime in about the scholarships. I am halfway done with process II at South campus. The dean just spoke to us about the scholarships this past week. She said that typically they give out several scholarships, but now there is only a few, like 4 or 5 that they will offer. And that is between all campuses. I wouldn't count on the scholarship. It will be difficult to get. I am going to try because I pay for my school out of my own pocket. If you have any questions, I will be happy to tell you what I know.

It seems like the information we need to fill out the Head to Toe Assessment sheet comes from the Jarvis Physical Examination & Health Assessment book. I am finding it all in there so far.

That email was very vague and ambiguous. It says to complete the head to toe physical assessment sheet. Where is that? I will try to figure it out today and let you know. Less than 24 hours and the madness begins.

The book they told me to get in the bookstore was Pharmacology and the Nursing Process 5th edition by Lilley, Harrington, and Snyder. The guy who helped me in the bookstore said that was what they were using. It came with the book and study guide.
