Hello everyone!! I have been doing my support courses for the last year and a half and I'm going to apply for the nursing program at Brookhaven this month. Though I'm not really stressing about it I am a little worried. This is my 3rd attempt at college and the first 2 times I did horrible!! Since I made the choice to go to nursing school in Summer of 2009, I've brought my GPA up from 1.76 to 3.0. And, all my grades in my support classes have been A's and B's except 1, Nursing Pathophysiology. I made a C in that class and it would have been a B if I had not made one mistake at the end of the course. So, my question is does anyone think that C in that class will hinder me much? If anyone can offer any insight it would be great. Thanks!!
Kinkymarcia: Its called: Brookhaven RN Program Grad: Dec2012 and I made it open for those who wanted to read it :) let me know if u wanna join.
So I was reading about the dreaded immunizations and found this on the brookhaven website:
"Documentation of a titer with specific lab values verifying immunity or seropositivity are also acceptable for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B and Varicella."
I googled it and found this:
Antibody titer is a laboratory test that measures the presence and amount of antibodies in blood. The antibody level in the blood is a reflection of past exposure to an antigen or to something that the body does not recognize as belonging to itself. The body uses antibodies to attack and remove foreign substances.
and
The tests are available for the following vaccines:MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) - each test available separately
Hepatitis B (order all tests on panel)
Diphtheria
Tetorifice
H. influenza (HiB)
Hepatitis A
Varicella-zoster (chickenpox)
Influenza A and B
Polio
Pneumococcal vaccines (adult "pneumonia shot" and pediatric Prevnar)
I'm going to see how much these tests cost and maybe Ill get one instead of getting a whole butt load of shots... haha excuse my pun
Hobbits - please let me know if you find a place that does the titer test for cheap :) I'm originally from AZ and I lost my shot records so I either have to get them all done again or get a titer..I want to do what is cheaper :)
Also, do you guys mind friending me on facebook? I know I'm not in the Fall 2011 nursing class but I think it would be cool to have some of you on my page so when I finally get into the nursing program I can have you guys as 'guides' if I have any questions :) Search on there for Brittany Grant and I'm the one with "Dallas Colleges" under my name :)
I wouldn't get the titer for tetorifice or diptheria, it will be cheaper just to get the TDAP shot and you need a new one every ten years anyways. I told the nurse in the clinic where I got my titers done that it had only been 6 or 7 years and she said it was fine to go ahead and get it again.
Hobbits,
I just purchased the Mossby (sp?) study cards for patho and pharm as well. I think these will be a good refresher as well as they contain neat little ways to remember important concepts!
Don't kill yourself this summer studying... relax, read a novel (you know, a book that is a story and entertaining!), spend time with friends and family, and sleep! I think we are going to eat, sleep, and breath school come this fall!!
Lupe,
I wear Urbane scrubs and love them! They get softer with each washing and they come in petite as well as tall. They also have many different styles of pants from the traditional bootcut to a tapered look. There is a great scrubs store off of 35E and I think Corporate in Lewisville. The name is Scrubs, Etc and they have a website and maybe different locations throughout the metroplex. Definently go and try on a few different brands. You will want to be comfy and I feel like I am wearing my jammies in mine!! 12 hour shifts can be very long!
I learned stuff!!!! I posted this on FB group the other day too.
First of all
CPR:
Ashlee was telling us on FB that she signed up for the Brookhaven CPR for health prof, I did too. May 7 from 8am-4pm I got my CPR packet and the class cost me $68 it was in the continuing education window by admissions in S building. I asked if they had more room and they said yes 26 slots. If your interested give them a call: (972) 860-4600 (tell them u want CPR) they need your student id, you can pay over phone or go in person. Either way you need to pick up your packet required for the class ahead of time.
Shots:
I went to talk to Denton county health dept phone:972-434-4700 and asked about titer and immunization costs. The nice lady said the titers are very expensive and the vaccines are not and that most nursing students they get just redo the shots because like Ashlee said it has been over 7 years. We pretty much need 3 shots, TB test and the proof of our Hep B series. The one you have to watch for is the varicella because you need 2 doses each are about $20 (which was cheaper then everyone else, I hope she was correct) so thats $40 and needs to be started by June(play it safe). The MMR vaccine which covers measles, mumps and rubella was $20. The last one is the DPT which is diphtheria pertussis, and tetorifice and that was also $20. The TB test needs 48 hours (its in the skin they make a bubble, then you come back in 48 hrs and they check it and sign your paper) and was $10 so all together there is 3 shots and TB totaling about $90 and no apt needed if you go to denton county health next to the DMV in Lewisville. Make sure you print that immunizations paper from the Brookhaven website under success camp!!! Basically you need proof of: (Hep B x3, Varcella x 2, MMR, DPT, & TB)
PLEASE correct me if I am wrong or missing something!
Went to half price books yesterday turned in a box full of books (making room for my new nursing books) and picked up a pharm book for $8 looks new so I could practice dosages and conversions. Mainly because those darn hesi tests love math from what I hear. My fiancée and I are re-organizing our little apt to simplify our lives. Throwing out clothes, putting away things we wont be using for a long time, cleaning out storage, bookshelves, pantry/fridge... I even cut my hair. Things need to be simple so that I don't spend 2 hours looking for a scrub top, and I don't want to dig through 2 year old frozen food to grab a TV dinner. Next on the list is my car.
Fortylove: Lol a book for fun? What is this you speak of?!? You mean.. like a book about nurses? Thats a good idea keep me motivated!!! Haha jk thanks thats a good idea, I may reread harry potter just for fun. What are you doing for fun this summer?
Briterz: I couldnt find you on FB, try adding me:
*edit* so before I posted this I saw that I am getting in trouble for posting links from Allnurses.com, I may have to stop. I didn't know that was a no no.
