Hi all! I thought I would start a new thread for all the people who got in Brookhaven's Fall 2010 program. I figured the people who did not get in would not want to see our posts anymore.
I did want to let you all know that I asked my friend that is first semester at Brookhaven, and she said that the scrubs they wear for clinical rounds are hunter green. They have to be embroidered on the back "brookhaven college" and the front has to have your name. Apparently there is a special order form that will be sent to us by ***. She suggests that you get 2 pairs when *** sends the order form, becasue she only got one, and she is now ordering an extra pair. She also said that she bought some other scrubs (all different colors) to wear when she is at school, because it is easier to work in. *** will e-mail us about all this but thought I would clue you in on what I know.
Anyone else got any news? LOL
Can't wait to meet you all (if I have not already)
Briterz,
I was not accepted to the program this go round and thought I could share my experience with you. I applied with 31 points, mostly from my 96 HESI and 3.5 GPA. It was not enough. I talked to the secretary about what the problem is, and it all boils down to those support courses. I had not completed Dosage, End of Life, or Micro, and it's what kept me from getting in. If you have perfect test scores and GPA you might have a chance of getting in without completing one or two support classes, but by the time you are ready to apply (after pre-reqs), its will be a very competetive program and you will NEED to have them done. Also, you should aim to get all the general/unrestricted classes done before you start the program, so that you can focus on the main stuff once you are accepted. Brookhaven is an intensive program that literally runs non-stop for 16 months. The only break you get is for Christmas. Try to lighten your load. For example, DEV Psych is offered this summer online, and has many sections still open.
With regard to SCIT vs. BIOL, I have taken both versions. SCIT is supposed to be an "applied" A&P, and my instructor taught us how certain aspects would be applied to the real world. Honestly, it seemed like a lot of memorization to me, and not a whole lot of the processes that were occuring. Applied may be easier for some people, and is offered online, which may be appealing also. MY EDUCATED SUGGESTION is to take the BIOL versions. Most 4-year schools(TWU, UTArlington,UTAustin, etc), and even Collin County and NCTC will not accept SCIT versions. Keep this in mind if you plan to transfer and get credit at any school other than Brookhaven or El Centro. I think you will benefit more from the BIOL version, as it is more encompassing of the physiology side of things. If you are taking classes at Richland, I have a great instructor suggestion for you.
Take your time getting the pre-reqs done. When it comes to A&P and Micro, try not to schedule too many other classes/work alongside them. Remember- these are the foundations to your career, and you should want to learn as much as you can from them, not just "pass them in order to apply". All nurses should be proficient in their A&P and other science courses, and there are tons of study material on the market. Check out Mosby's flash cards.
As for the Accuplacer, you should understand elementary math, algebra 1, and geometric/spatial reasoning. You can get tutoring and support to brush up on it, by googling or going to the campus "math corner". And you can retake it at a later time, if need be.
Like I said, I was not accepted, but I figure that counts just as much as someone who was, because I can tell you what didn't work! :)
I am confident that I will get in for next spring; I was lucky enough to get registered for End of Life and Dosage this summer! I wish you the best of luck, and hope everyone who made it has an awesome year, and become the best RNs in Texas!
Hi Sweetpea1301, Did you hear Brookhaven is accepting 20 more students for Fall 2010. Two of my friends got a call from the Nursing division. They had 32.4 and 31.9 points. This time we will have 60 students in our group. I actually felt good about it because my friends worked really hard but still weren't accepted at first. Well I hope that you are also in the program with us. I wish you good luck. Bye
Hello every, and congrats to those who were accecpted into the fall 2010 program. I just started taking my pre-req classes and wanted to know are there any good teachers you all could recommend for end of life and A&P 1&2, microbiology and english 1302 at brookhaven Thank you for your help.:)
