I remember feeling shocked, stunned, and helpless when I was lived through and experienced 9/11/2001.
I heard the news about the murder/suicide (that's what was reported in the news story) on the 10:00 news earlier in the week when it happened.
I then, again, felt shocked, stunned, and helpless when, just a few hours later at work, I learned it was someone I "knew" yet someone I had never met.
How can you shed tears over someone you didn't personally know? Because I did. The thought of all the people impacted by this: family, friends, co-workers, etc, just makes me so sad.
To each and every one of you who knew him and/or his family personally, my condolences. There are no words...

My condolences to the moderators and people who personally knew him. I'm sure this is tough for you and I can't imagine what emotional turmoil you're experiencing right now. You're part of an incredible community that I can say has helped me since the the beginning of my nursing education, and I hope will remain and continue helping me and countless others for many more years to come.
Incredibly tragic and mystifying, heartbreaking and thought provoking. I have been a member of ALLnurses for a while, visiting here when I needed to read on how bad other peoples nursing lives were when I wanted to tell myself I'll be ok too. It is a wonderful forum and Brian did a wonderful thing when he began this "place" for some of us to go. It has been a place of answers and a sanctuary, a happy place and a great place for advice. I loved it then and I love it now. I hope All nurses will continue as a tribute to his thinking and his foresight as just how badly we-uns needed a place to call on as our own.Thank you Brian and Thankyou to this staff for maintaining (it can't be easy) in the midst of all that has happened. May God Bless All of you.
Grief has no rules. Sadly, grief doesn't discriminate. Remember that going forward. Just because you are a nurse or in healthcare, does not mean that you are invincible or exempted from suffering, in any way.
There are are so many talented, intelligent, generous, compassionate and dedicated folks on this site — it's important that in tough times, you take solace and find community within your tribe.
Brian Short founded this amazing tribe. May the tribe find comfort, Grace and peace.
Godspeed.
