Has anyone ever been at a birth where the parents thought their baby was gonna be one sex, but ended up being the other? I'm not talkin' about those parents who chose to be surprised, but those who saw the girl or boy parts on the u/s... And, what were there reactions?

I wasn't there, but my the u/s tech told my friend's parents they were having a boy. They decked out the baby's room in blue and baseballs and such and picked out the name Russell. Then she was born. So my friend's name is Amy Russell. Ha! But of course this was back in the very early 80's...thins may have changed since then.

A nurse I worked with years ago had 3 ultrasounds during her last pregnancy and the last 2 she was told it was a female and the radiologist even wrote that on the report. She was named Suzanne after a beloved aunt and all clothes and decor were pink and frilly and waiting on the big day. Thank God she was fully awake and unmedicated when her son was born because everyone in the room was shocked! And no, he was 'well armed' so microphallus (or micro anything) was not an issue.:)

i have a friend named amy russell who was also born in the 80's...how weird! of course, russell is her last name. and what's weirder? i only talk to her once a month or so...and she just called me as i signed onto allnurses...spoooooky!
forgive me for the off-topicness, but since i'm there, might as well stay for a spell...i know brother and sister named russell and russann...they're not twins or anything, but they look just alike, it's odd.

Has happened several times. Sometimes it takes parents a while to 'get it' and/or deal with the disappointment if there is any. But I've never seen anyone who wasn't happy eventually. Surprised, yes. Taking stuff back to the store (or sending a little girl home in blue dogs and trucks :)), but eventually, it's been my experience that people are glad to have a healthy baby.

That's why I did my daughter's nursery all in this moons and stars theme... it was pretty neutral. Now my son's nursery, we did go ahead and do all in blue and a sports theme, because the 3D ultrasound was just WAY too obvious. =)
Saw a movie on Lifetime the other night where this guy stood to inherit like, 50 million dollars if he had a SON, and he HAD to be married, so he scams this woman into marrying her, then dopes her up on Roofies, has some strange man have sex with her ('cause HE'S shooting blanks).... midway through the movie they find out they are having a girl, from the ultrasound, and then the second half of the movie is all this guy trying to have an affair with another woman, trying to have his wife killed, getting put in jail and getting the death penalty for (accidentally) having his mistress murdered, and THEN, in the end, it turns out to be a boy after all, and the wife inherits all the money (since he's in jail, and no one but the two of them ever knew that the baby wasn't actually his).

I've seen it quite a few times. I like when the mom exclaims, "Are you sure???!"

Yes several times. One couple thought they were having a girl and out came a little boy. Later the dad told me they had a cute pink nursery and over $1000 worth of girl clothes that they had already taken all the tags off of and washed! People...wait until the kid comes out before you take the tags off!!

i knew a russann back in 1973-4, her mom was an rn working at a small army hospital in maryland. any chance your russann is about late 50s?
i'm a displaced delawarian, actually, not a native of the old line state (although they're obviously kissin' cousins!) but y'know, if the russann you're referring to had a maiden name that was a color, we're onto something here!
(i had a patient named russann a few years back, and she was around my age. the only other one i know of...i think her dad was a russell. it's such an uncommon name, russann!)

My first year in school, we had a gym teacher who was obviously expecting a girl. She and her loved ones had filled the room with pink balloons, dresses, blankets, girly-girl things, it looked like a gift shop in there!!! She had had a couple of US that indicated "girl".......so they were sure. They were so excited.
Well, when the baby came out the doctor glanced around the room, grinned, and said, "I hope you all saved the receipts for all this stuff, cause unless you want a boy dressed in pink, you will need to take it all back!" The mom and her husband were in a state of shock.....how could it be??? "NO WAY! We want to see!". A BOY?!!!! Fortunately, they were very good-humored and clearly happy to have a healthy baby as they had endured a couple of heart-breaking losses before.
It was a clear lesson for me when I got pregnant; never rely soley on U/S for gender determination. You just can't. I colored each nursery in gender-neutral colors and did not stock up on boy or girl clothes til the babies were born!
