Bosses playing favorites

I will try not to make this too long or too much of a vent but boy am I upset !:banghead:There are 2 units where I work and some staff, including me have to work both places when needed.I hired on with this understanding as well as the new hires after me.In the beginning the other RN, who works with me took turns rotating, then it got to be just me.Next the newest RN hired hardly ever goes over because he works the same shift as a family member and they ride together. Mind you , this unit is like 5 min away so its no big deal to drive and the only time he has to go is if there is a call in on his scheduled night and the other nurse working with him has not been oriented to that unit. The other unit has a lot of call ins {which the nurse mgnr does nothing about }and I'm convinced they have a copy of our unit's call schedule so they know when whoever is working so they can call in.Now , the nurse mgmt has hired extra nurses to cover that unit but schedules only me there as well and now when census is down , take a guess who they are calling off:confused: and to make matters worse, I can't use PTO to cover it and then the nurses from that unit say"well I would of took call off if they'ed have asked." Its hard to go talk to the boss about all this when she is the one making the decisions...any suggestions?

Sorry, I am not understanding some of your post. You are saying you no longer rotate to go to this other unit, and because you are scheduled so much there over the others, you have to be called off more then the other nurses? If so, I would approach your nurse manager just that way and point out how many times within a certain period you have had to be called off. If you don't object going to this other unit more then the others, simply ask to be rotated on the times called off. I hope you get it straightened to be fair for all.

Talk to your boss about your concerns first. Yes its hard, but going over her head before taking to your boss first is unprofessional and immature. If you don't get the answer you are looking for after you talk to your boss, than go over her to talk with her supervisor. Maybe she is oblivious to your concerns. Good luck.

Hate to say it but there are favorites and unless your one of them it can suck if you take it personally. Is it right? no---but it is human nature...I have favorite people I work with, and I am sure my boss has her favorites too. My husband has his favorite employees, I go into help at the kids school and I have my favorite students.

With out complaining about any other staff just go to your boss and say "hey I keep getting down timed and it is hurting my pay check" What can I do to make sure I am getting X amount of hours.

As for the calling off, what happens is that because I am scheduled there from my home unit, the nurses who are there on their home unit get to work while I'm called off even though I have more seniority than them . :bluecry1:

why not discuss your concern during your unit meeting,i supposed your boss is smart enough to get your point,if unsolved go next step to the higher superior.I am not sure if you are aware of proper chanelling,but at least you start bringing this to your immediate boss.I do had this conflict before.I talked with the person concern in respect of her position.It didn't work,again i brought it during the unit meeting wherein a higher superior is present,problem solved.

You need to pull your manager aside and calm stately your concerns. They should be calling staff of the same stature off on a rotating basis to be fair to all. If your manager doesn't make the change and it remains unfair take it to HR. Pointing it out to your manager should do the trick. If not take it higher or get out of there.

Are you in a unionized facility? Contact your steward or start organizing.

I agree, this sounds very unfair. Next question, if you don't mind going to the other unit and know that some of the nurses don't mind being called off can't you just tell whoever is charge and calling you off to ask them first before calling you? Good luck !!!

Some good ideas posted, and thanks for clarifying. I can't understand going to the other unit and being called off. It sounds like you have two issues. One with your NM for just sending you vs rotating, the other with the other unit's NM. That is a little more difficult. I would suggest first talking to both about the different issues... but also talking to HR after that depending on the information you receive from both. In the mean time you could be looking around the facillity for other job offers. I am curious how it is resolved however.. and hope it turns out fine just with initial talks.

It would be nice if there were 2 nurse managers,but the same manager is in charge of both units.I tried talking to the nurse who works opposite me about why she no longer goes and she said it was because of seniority.Funny how that works for her but not me !:cry:
