My clinical instructor threw me out of clinical!
I agree the instuctor should have been more forthcoming but it seems there are more out there to get rid of you than there are to help you. Agreed you should have delegated and took responsibility to get the med pass done on time but she didn't teach you anything by responding to your mistakes the way she did.I remember one of my first pts was an old man who was in contact isolation, who had a peg tube that I HAD TO PUT MEDICINE IN [before I even knew what the heck a peg tube was} and Mrs.W... sent me in and then left; so I stood there thinking OMG what do I do now. The thought occured to just throw it away because she had done nothing but give me a hard time but my heart wouldn't let me.So.....I got out of all that garb , went and found a nurse who helped me /showed me what to do so ....I guess what I'm trying to get across is do your best, don't be afraid to ask for help and don't let sour misarable instructors make you quit.I didn't and am soo glad even after all these years.

Psych Nurses... Problem
I agree with the other nurses and double ditto with PsychRNinNY.Most places I have worked have a system in place to where a pt such as your grandmother can be referred to a outpt mental health clinic and thus to a psychiatrist, so I agree there must have been more to this story,Our initial assessments require us to answer if there is any physical issues which could interfere with the potential use of restraints and no nurse I know would place your grandmother in a chair with wrist restraints or in a bed with 3 people. I'm very sorry you and your grandmother and family are going thru this rough time but please think about what the other posters said about there being more to the story. Good luck and God bless you and your grandmother.

Care Plan Help for Self Care Deficit - Dressing
I think I know what you are tryng to get across whodunit, you are agreeing that long trivial care plans are useless and time consuming but also necessary in the beginning to teach new nurses how to think like a nurse? You sound like you really care about your pts .

How My Instructor Affected My Life
I also remember the bad ole days and our instructor like yours{theres one in every crowd I think}I worked my way thru college cleaning houses for doctors, raising 2 kids and taking care of husband, family and home. I had to fight to get thru, had quit school in the 8th grade due to a lot of family abuse, so it took everything I had to get there.I graduated in the top 3 of our class and at the end of 1st year , when the ole battleaxe told me I didn't deserve to go on to second year, she just about crushed my will and what little confidence I had . The love of my family and the desire to help people and have a better life kept me going thank God. After all theses years the thought of her leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Congratulations to you.

"Nursing Home Mentality"
I don't easily take offense lol, and did not intend to sound like I'm picking on long term care nurses. As, I've said there are a lot of great nurses out there as well as people who are there to do the least they can do for their paycheck. Sorry to say, they are everywhere, acute care, ER , everywhere !

"Nursing Home Mentality"
I worked as RN house supervisor at a nsg home and know exactly what she means by her statement. Yes, there are wonderful nurses like you out there but there are a lot more just like the ones you have described that you are working with. Mentality /reality is most people who run these homes don't care who gets dumped on and who just skates thru as long as they don't have to come in and help out.So , what happens is that mistakes are made, people are neglected, and good nurses finally get enough that they leave nsg homes, which is what I did. Sad, yes, but neccessary at times unless you want to stay a doormat from now on doing most of the work, while the jokes are drawing a paycheck too,

Blurred Boundaries: Should we eliminate the distinction between RNs and LPNs?
I remember when team nsg {which I thought was great because it made the best use of all our knowledge and talents} changed to primary nsg and it was pretty bad.Our floor might have TURP going along with another pt with a dopeamine drip, and a pt just back from a total hip replacement and the LPNS were lost in doing neurochecks etc. They came {thank God} and asked for help but it was really unfair to expect them to take on a RN job. With that said , it was also hard for us RNS because we were so used to the hands on care the lpns provided such as dsg changes etc,

Was anyone poor before becoming a nurse?
We lost everything due to bad IRS problems and went from living in our nice brick home to a rented house that had the walls seperating from the floor. We bought used clothing and stuffed the cracks and I decided my 2 babies were going to live better.I had quit school in the 8th grade and didn't know anything except that my life had to get better. I started cleaning houses for doctors and worked my way thru colllege. It took me 6 years to get a 2 year degree and altho we live decent now, I'll never forget the hard times or feel anything other than poor and blessed ! Good luck and hang in there !

Bosses playing favorites
I agree, this sounds very unfair. Next question, if you don't mind going to the other unit and know that some of the nurses don't mind being called off can't you just tell whoever is charge and calling you off to ask them first before calling you? Good luck !!!

Do nurses talk about their patients when the leave
I agree with the other posts; its hard not to be self concious at times and most of us are.I don't think any nurse worth her/ his salt would say anything derogative about a pt's body. But , just to play Devil's advocate...as a psych/ ETOH, , drug and rehab nurse.. we are trained to be alert to pts who present and appear fearful or uncomfortable doing such a basic task. It throws up alarms such as are you being abused, or using IV drugs, etc.You can always wear a thin shirt, or make a off hand comment such as "I've lost a lot of weight and darn if the stretch marks haven't found me".Alittle humor goes a long way, try being gentle :loveya:with yourself! hugs to you!!!
