-sigh-
I decided that I needed a break from LTC and SNF to be a pediatric home care nurse. However, I'm staring to miss the hussle and bussle of getting through a hectic and almost unbearable shift at a nursing facility.
I'm so bored at my current job that I can't bear the thought of going back to work . Yet, I plan to hang in there because I have no other choice and its pretty flexible with school. I do try things to pass the time other than my nursing duties but time still drags.... my shifts range between 8-11 hours/day. Sometimes I catch myself dosing off in the middle of the day:yawn: and have to fight to stay awake.
This is just a vent. I am so grateful I have a job and atleast I don't have to pass meds for 20 plus people and be totally stressed. I know no job is perfect but this is definitely not my niche.

I wish I could be "bored" at work. To have time and not to have to run around and be totally stressed out would be a joy for me!
Enjoy this time while you can, become soon enough you'll be overworked and stressed to the max and miss the good old "boring" days.
I used to be a secretary back in the day and felt so "bored". My best job was as a hospital secretary and it was friendly, laid back and you could listen to the radio.
All these years in nursing have been anything but slow and boring, exhausting and stressful instead. Boy do I miss the good old "boring" days.
Can you read or book or study during the down time?

I do study at one of my cases but the I have one client that constantly wants to play and he demands my attention.

Well the boredom time I have is when I chart. To suffer through it I have access to pandora and depending on the night is what station it goes on.
I miss working on TCU and constantly being busy. It was not my choice to leave TCU it was my managers. She wanted me to switch to LTC and thats when I resigned.

I also work in home care, so yea its not that busy. I work night shift (11pm to 7am) so when everyone's asleep, i just whip out my iphone until the sun comes up :)

I also just switched from a job where I was basically jogging all day (med-surg) to one where I am not nearly as busy (SICU). It is a very hard adjustment and my coworkers keep making fun of me because when I go to leave a room and get meds etc. I still have my run-walk going. It is a VERY odd feeling to not be sweating, not have my head spinning, and not have to be ten places at one time right now! It is much more mental than physical. The days seem so much longer now and usually by 2:00 p.m. I find myself almost nodding off. Very very different. I use my down time to study my GIANT orientation binder and medication binder, stalk other nurses and docs to ask questions etc.
I can see why you are having a hard adjustment with switching to home care with one patient. I would suggest a laptop, kindle, etc. Maybe you could take up crocheting or some other type of activity? Since you have one client who likes to play perhaps you could research stories or games etc. he/she may like? look up recipes, shop, pay bills, make appointments, find some fun internet games etc? It will take some time to adjust to this new type of work.
Another idea would be to get some exercise while there if your little play pals condition permits it. Tag, hide and seek, raising them in the air on your knees etc. Kids make for fabulous exercise partners!

I could have written this same post! However, it pays well and it allows for school. Keep plugging along ... you could always try and pick up a few PRN positions like 1 or 2 a month at a SNF.

The time all hell breaks loose and you are dozing away will make up for several shifts of boredom. You are right to think about the alternative of not working. Many would love to have your problem.

I always bring different kind of stuff to do like novels, my school books and other stuff if the patients permit and most time they do. Theres nothing you can do if theres nothing to do. Just wing it. But since you are in school its great time and avenue to study. I did it for 4 years and it helped me a lot. Had a patient that allowed me to use the computer whenever the patient was sleeping
