boneheads who want to be spoonfed!!

I had a similar situation. In Winter Quarter of my last year of nursing school we had a wonderful instructor. She gave us case studies and had us devide up in groups, one was the ER group one the Med Surg, one CCU...She just gave us the s/sx of the patient and asked us what we do now. It really made us think. As she said, we knew what we needed to know by that point, we had been spoonfed for three years, it was time to put it into practice and start critical thinking. We had a group of students who went to the head of the nursing department and complained. All they were worried about was what was on the NCLEX, not putting things into practice. The head of the department made her change her teaching style and we went back to being spoonfed. She left the nursing school. SOme people just don't get it. Nursing isn't about changing bandages and emptying bedpans anymore, it takes a lot of critical thinking, and knowing what to do when a patient goes bad. I wrote her a long letter telling her that what happened was just wrong.

Well when you get out of school and start charting,, you dont get three answers to pick from when you have to chart anatomy and physiology. You draw those words from your memory and learning of the subject, including the correct spellings.

Sounds like your istructor is doing just what they are supposed to do.

There are always going to be people who want the easy way out. They usually get what they pay for. Ya cant call your instructor to ask how to spell cholecystecomy if you dont know what it is, and i doubt it would look to professional charting they had their Gallbladder out. Cant put Gallbladder removal on a surgical permit.

Well, I for one would detest a fill in the blank test. I think they're incredibly stressful. Would I file a formal complaint? Lol... no. That's incredible.

grrrrr!!! Our A&P professor has told us that a couple of students have filed complaints about the class. We have only had 1 test, and it was mostly fill in the blanks. These people complained that all of our tests should be multiple choice (its too much writing and too difficult to remember that much material) and that the professor should use more handouts (meaning handouts of what information we should know) and that they want "group work".
Come on. Seriously? As far as the tests go, either you know the material or you dont! It should not matter what format the test is given in! I am in the same class and wrote the same test....98%. If I (and other classmates) can score 80% or higher, then I think its a matter of these other folks not trying hard enough.
As for handouts, each class we are given a handout with an outline of whats being covered. Its up to you to do the reading and make notes. These boneheads want all the material given out! They dont want to do the work!!!
And group work....geez....we dont have time for that! Not only that, they want to be given a good grade for nothing! Our professor doesnt want to add that to our plate, but he's being forced by the Nursing Director!
I cant believe how some people can be! This is College! You need to do the work! Yes, its a lot of work, but come on! It can be done! I'm proof of that!

This totally ticks me off too!!

We just had our phys test and our instructor gives you all the info that will be on the test...she tells you what the questions will be and even lets you record it!!!

I take notes in lecture (by the way she also provides these), create tests form the info she gives and study it as if the entire test is fill ins. The tests are mostly multiple choice, but you need to know the reasons for the answers to do well. I got 100 on the test plus 2 bonus points.

People are complaining because the multiple choice answers were too CONFUSING!!!!!! She gave us all the test questions verbally! All you had to do was record them, or write them down! There were no surprize questions or anything that wasn't already given to you.

This scares the heck out of me..... I hope the people I work with someday actually LEARNED the material and didn't just figure out how to pass the tests.

My microbio partner (not my choice), will not even read the labs and then wants to tell me how to do them..... I got an 89 on my first test... he barely passed. I made a few simple errors.... which I learned from. He is still doing the same things.... it drives me nuts! He wants to go on to be a doctor.....

I know there are going to be times when you couldn't put in the effort you wanted to....life happens. But overall, the attitude that the grades are owed to you without appropriate work is just ridiclous.

That is SO SAD!!! You all lost a good professor cause some people just can't think on their own. How horrible!

oh-- it sounds so familiar!! I got over 100% on the first exam in A&PI. It was difficult but I studied. So many people were complaining about the prof etc. Some called the exam idiotic! Why- just because they failed it??? One person said to the prof " I can't understand your lecture, I guess I'll have to read the book" HAHAHAHAH yah maybe you need to read!! Another woman complained about having to draw and write essays--she skipped the whole part! stupid since it was half the test.

We have been given a set of objectives for each unit---exactly what will be covered on the tests! If you can answer these objectives- you know the stuff! What are these people thinking? We're all pre-nursing but what are they going to do if they actually get in the program!! SCARY

In my nursing theory lecture, there is a student who constantly asks "Will this be on the test?" In our lecture notes (the instructor makes them up as a powerpoint presentation and then makes copies for us) there was a diagram showing how neuropharmaceuticals work, and the instructor said something about not worrying about studying the diagram, and the student actually said "Oh, so can I cross it out on my notes?" WTH??

Yes it was sad Twinmommy. I live in a small backwoods community. She was just far too progressive for our school. It is really too bad. I learned a lot from her, and owe my critical thinking skills to her. She was a great lecture teacher and an even better clinical teacher. The question she always got was, "Is this going to be on the NCLEX?" As if the she knows what's going to be on the NCLEX! Her answer was, "I'm not worried about the NCLEX, study for it on your time. I'm worried about the patient care." I couldn't imagine going through having my first patient go bad, without the things she taught me. Some school out there is very lucky to have her.

I have both of my nursing classes with people similar to what you are describing and it makes me go crazy in class. Constantly saying "is this on the test" "do I need to know this"????? We have 1 teacher that only lectures on what she feels is important. She doesn't lecture on anything that isn't on the test in some fashion or another - so if you go to class, pay attention and read the sections that were dicussed in class....you'll do fine on the tests. You think that would be easy for the spoonfeeders....but no....we have several students that actually got angry because she wouldn't do a test review and have threatened to go to the program director and make complaints.

Then we have the opposite teacher that refuses to do test reviews, feels that everything discussed is important AND on the test (all 4-6 chapters worth). The spoonfeeders don't like her either and make one complaint after another about her.....but I like her because she actually makes you think about what you need to learn and how to apply it to everyday life. But then I guess that is what I thought education was....silly me.

Its a good thing these people aren't in my classes, they would die! We are not spoon fed anything. We have had people to ask what do we need to know for the test? Answer was you need to know it all!! Of course we have the complaints the test are too hard, the questions are confusing, (and they are hard & confusing). Our instructor tells them if you don't know the material by now.........& how do expect to pass the boards if you can't do it in class. He is very good & does try to give tips but his favorite saying is I am not going to spoon fed you the material.Our last test was over 11 chapters & no he did not tell us what questions might be on it so we had to know it all!!!
