BMCC Fall 2020

Published

Hi anyone applying for BMCC for fall 2020 ?
Just finishing the last of my pre-recs and going to do Bio 426 in Spring and Kaplan in Spring 2020 too . Not sure if my PCI is good enough ?

I was told that we would hear something back for FALL 2020 the first week of June. Things could change I’m just passing the information along. I pray that we get in to any program that we apply to and will apply to moving forward. From ASN - BSN- MSN - DNP WHATEVER ROAD IS CHOSEN. ☺️???❤️

Hi Everyone,

First of all good luck to everyone who is applying to the fall 2020 program. I think its kind of cool how the test got canceled but I know some people need that to balance out their scores.

I am actually applying for the Spring 2021 class and I am taking Bio 425 and Mat 104 this Summer... actually start class in about 2 weeks. I want to ask some advice... Assuming I get A's on both Summer courses I would have a 3.59 GPA but given its so competitive I'm tempted to retake the English 101 class which I took a long time ago and got a B. If I retake the English 101 class for the July part of the Summer and manage to get an A my GPA would be at 3.76.

I just want some opinion on what you would do if that was your situation. I know that I will still have to take the HESI exam in November given this whole Covid-19 situation settles so I am prepared for that because I have been studying as much as possible. All feedback is welcome.

Thanks!

Hi Nursewannabe,

First, I wanna congratulate you for coming this far. In my humble opinion, I think 3.59 is still a good GPA. There is this idea that only people with 4.00 or 3.9 GPA get into the program. So if everyone has 4.00, 3.9 or 3.8, so then all these students are Genius and the nursing department should at least accept more than 200 students per semester. I think there is a bit of exaggeration when it comes to GPA. I have a friend who is currently in the program. She got accepted with a 3.5 GPA. But I also know someone who did not get into the program with a 3.8 GPA. I don`t want you to look down on your GPA simply because everyone is claiming to have 4.00 GPA. I know the Nursing program can be very competitive but beyond that competitiveness, there are people who still get in with sometimes a lower GPA than yours. But having say that, if you think there will be a possibility for you to get a better grade in English, then go for it. But don`t retake the class and end up with a lower grade than what you actually have. I`m not also sure if your English was transferred from another school or you did it at BMCC. Anyway, this is just my opinion and just remember that my opinion is not a universal truth. You have a final word. I just wanna conclude by wishing you nothing but the best.

Hi, I think you should re-take the English 101. Schools are getting more and more competitive and unfortunately, it is very much all based on the GPA, a great example of that being the current situation in which the HESI was cancelled due to COVID and they will now take the first 81 students with the highest GPA since there is nothing else to go by. GPA is always very, very important. Some schools conduct interviews and request letters of recommendation so basically if more factors are involved such as these I have listed above then someone who has a 3.6 GPA may be accepted over someone who has a 3.7 GPA but does not have, let's say brilliant rec letters. At private schools there are more requirements/criteria so the GPA situation is slightly more forgiving. But when there is no other criteria besides the GPA then the students with the highest GPA will get in.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think that after just giving it thought I'm not going to retake it. it was a B+ and I'm OK with that. I'm going to apply to other programs as well but of course right now bmcc is my first choice. I have heard of St Pauls School of Nursing as a super duper last resort plus all the negative reviews of that school. UGhhhhhhh anyway sorry about my babbling. Good luck to everyone I hope you all get in this fall..!!

Hi,

I think if Bmcc does not work for you, the best option will be private schools. I wouldn't really recommend any other cuny school because they are all public schools with pretty much the same policies. Personally I think most people choose cuny not because its nursing program is the only best program in town but rather for its affordable tuition fee. Many of us wouldn't attend Cuny if it weren't for its affordable tuition fee. Now having say that , I have few private schools in mind . I know them because few people that I know who couldn't get into Cuny nursing program ended up attending these schools and some of them are even working at the best hospitals in town. So these private schools are : College of Mount saint Vincent. At this college they accept HESI or TEAS exam taking outside their school curriculum. Second school is Mercy College and last but not the least is saint Francis College. But these are not the only private schools in town, there are lot of schools out there. I'm just giving you a few that people I know went to. I also want you to remember that these are all private schools , so their tuition fees are higher than Cuny but it's worth trying if Nursing is really a call for you. I'm also trying everything that I can to get into Cuny nursing program but if it doesn't work, I'll end up in one of these schools. I don't know anyone who end up dying because she/he took a loan. The goal is to finish the program, get to work and start repaying you loan. Wishing you all the best.

Hi all,

I applied for Fall 2020 at BMCC Nursing like many of you. I have a 4.0 GPA with straight A's in all PCIs (Chem, Eng, A&P 1, Psych and Math). I am trying for the Evening Program and got A's in Microbiology, A&P 2 and Sociology too. The nursing advisor also let me submit a letter of recommendation from my boss who is a physician.

She told me that there are just over 300 applicants for Fall 2020. I sat with her and submitted my documents in-person, prior to the University closing due to COVID-19. Best of luck to everyone!

Dear JDMNYC,

Great job on attaining those excellent scores. I am also interested in applying for the evening program and I have a few questions regarding your correspondence with the advisor.

1. Do you know if those 300 applicants are for both day and evening students?

2. Is the letter of recommendation a new requirement for evening applicants? Is it to verify that the applicant is a full-time day employee?

3. Is there anything that you can share about being an evening applicant? I just feel that most conversations and experiences I find are for the day applicants. Not so many resources for evening applicants...

Thank you and all the best to you.

Hey hey ?

1. I believe the 300+ was for both sections, day and evening.

2. The letter was part of the checklist for evening-only applicants, so I believe it is to prove employment.

3. They seem to make it much more complicated for Evening program applicants so that you complete all requirements of the program, other than clinical nursing courses, prior to applying. I assume this is because the coursework is rigorous and it would be difficult for most to manage a full-time employment, a clinical course and Microbiology, for example, all at the same time.

The nursing advisor told me that usually a 4.0 is not enough to guarantee acceptance and that the HESI test would require a minimum of 75% to be considered. Now that the HESI is cancelled due to COVID-19, it is purely the PCI of the applicants being considered. If there are more than 81 applicants with a 4.0, I assume they will use the overall GPA as the next qualifier. The COVID-19 grading policy of taking credit rather than a grade also has no effect on any non-PCI courses, such as Microbiology.

Hope that helps!

I really admire how you explained everything in much detail. I am also in the same shoes as yours but applying into DAY program . I have a 4.0 GPA IN PCI AND 4.0 GPA IN OVERALL. I wish everyone the best.
