Blood pressure: NY question

Published

Do CNA's take blood pressure? I was looking through the practical skills list, and saw blood pressure. I was a cna years ago, and this wasnt part of the skills test. So I am just curious if things changed. .. Any info?

I take vitals, including BP (most automatic, some require manual), every 4 hours on every patient assigned to me.

Thanks runner! Do you know if it's on the skills test in NYC?

Not sure about NY. I'm in NC and it's on the skills test. Everyone has to do one measurement skill so it could be BP, respiration, heart rate, etc.

I work in a nursing home. I do BP daily on at least one resident. Usually it the digital but sometimes the manual if the resident has a know condition or if the nurse prefers it.

I took my test in Connecticut and it was on the skills test. They only required the digital pressure cuffs tho, and not the manual. In my class, we only learned to do it manually.

It wasn't on the test when I took it a couple of years ago in Ny.

I'm an RN in NYS. Whether or not it's on the test, I don't know a single facility that would consider hiring a CNA who cannot take an accurate, manual blood pressure. Sometimes the digital/whatever equipment is not available. Sometimes the patient's condition will require you to take a manual BP, with a cuff and scope.

If you want to work in NY, you'll need to know it.

In CA it was on the skills test, I think its important but in the job duty it depends on your facility.

I just took the skills test in WA, and it is possible to show up on the test. (I didn't have it, but another student did). I rarely have to take BP at work, but it is good to know how for those times when it is needed.

Thanks guys. My school doesn't teach how to take bp. Is it possible to learn on my own?

I'm doing a internship in a doctors office and I take vitals (BP, P, Temp, weight, and Ht). I'm just in my pre-nursing classes so the internship is the only medical training that I have encountered beside my CPR/AED/First Aid class.

YouTube has many instructional videos….It's how I learned!

where are you taking your cna if you don't mind me asking? I'm doing mine is hostos community college and were almost down we have 4 days of class and 6 of clinicals. And yesterday we went over respiration and pulse. The teacher mentioned it wouldn't be on the skills part of the (b/p) but you should def read up on. I'm going to ask her on Monday and let you know for sure. I did MA before so I know the basics of manual b/p it is always good to know in worst case scenario.
