Blah - bad sociology class

Published

 I had my Intro to Social Problems class last night. I am usually intrigued by classes like this but I completely disliked the teacher. This is a first session class and she requires that we write 3 essays on 3 articles she gives us, write a research paper and do an oral presentation on it, have a mid -term and have a final. Now, I usually wouldn't mind, but she seemed very arrogant and told us that not many people will have an A in this class since that represents an exceptional student. With all the papers we have to write, our grade is basically determined by her since we only have 2 real tests.

Is it just me, or the teachers who teach "EASIER" classes sometimes have a wrong attitude? It is sociology for God's sake!

Specializes in Operating Room.

She obviously has let the term "college instructor" or "professor" go to her head. lol

Good luck!

I didn't like Sociology either. I actually took it with American Literature during a summer course way back when. The instructor was a religous guy...a preacher or something. He spent his time talking more about religion than sociology.

While, I enjoyed the conversations, it didn't help any at all with learning.

I made a C. ooops. Well, that was before going back to get my ADN, and I "have grown up now!" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

...But.....It transfers!!!!! LOL

Well, I don't think I will keep the class. I don't need it, after all. It is a major elective for BSN and I wanted to take some classes for BSN since I have no pre-requisites left for ADN (but Micro).

Yeah, and she mentioned that she has a Dr. in front of her name quite a few times lol.

Good idea on dropping. If you are able to drop it, then you should. If a teacher is already loading the class with work and then informs them that getting an A is near impossible- that is a huge tipoff that her grades do not reflect a person's efforts.

I didn't find this until after I had signed up and paid for my fall classes, but this site is a good way to get an idea on what other students think about professors and how their classes work.

:smackingf

I liked my A&P 1 professor. He was a "Dr.", but said, "You can call me Kelly or Dr. Sexton. If you say Mr. Sexton, I'm going to look around for my Dad." (not suppose to give names, but it's a good comment...lol) I usually called him Kelly.

He was a great instructor.....wish I could have him for every class! He didn't rub his PhD into anyone's face, and he treated everyone on a mature level...as an equal that he was just helping to learn something.

I'm not too thrilled with my sociology class, either. The textbook isn't too bad a read, but the teacher just stands up there and talks, repeating himself a lot, and restating things in different words, so it's really hard to take good notes. I found that following along in the textbook while he lectured helped me keep track of what really needed to be in my notes.

I have to take this class since it's a prereq for the ADN, so I'm stuck with it. Oh well, it's just one semester.

LOL! I just checked him out at ratemyprofessor.com:

"Usually easy going. Tends to repeat himself alot, but doesn't bog you down with useless information."

My thoughts exactly!

If it's not too late I'd switch to another prof. This lady sounds like bad news!

:p

I drop any class with a teacher who brags about not giving an A's. The reason. These teachers enjoy it so much, that they go out of their way to give anything less than an A. Sociology is graded by opinion, so this is extremely bothersome. I once turned in a paper to two different teachers and received two different grades. That's why I like math and science. For the most part, it is either right on wrong. It is not based on opinion.

Exactly what I am thinking. I thought this class would be fun, I don't want to go through torture just to prove I am "an exceptional student". She also mentioned that if we don't participate in class, she will fail us?! What about people who are shy or like to keep to themselves in class, or simply be quiet?

It is rediculous.

P.S. She is not listed on http://www.ratemyprofessors.com

Thanks for replying :)

I liked Sociology, but I would not risk abad grade by taking a cuckoo prof. Can you switch sections?

Hee, hee my SO rating goes from excellent to bad. Guess it depended on the grade he gave you.

Thanks guys!

I dropped the class and feel good about it :)

Now, on to Micro and 2 other classes :)
