  1. I don't think I'm too old, just too old to want to go through 2 years of prereqs followed by the long waiting list, then two years of nursing school. I want to start working. It we didn't have the wait list, I'd probably try it again. As it stands now, it a dream that will never be fulfilled.
  2. I wanted to pursue nursing in another school but I'm 49. By the time my condition is resolved and I have to take all those prereqs again, it will be too late. Thanks for the information. I suspected it was a rip-off but I've got people telling me I should try it.
  3. I am a nursing student who recently failed and was thrown out of the nursing program. This was due to a recent medical diagnoses I received that prevented me from studying. I have now found myself in search of a new career. I received a job offer from a place called Health Career Agent. Apparently, you recruit for medical professionals from your home. You have to pay forty dollars for the software and become incorporated. You don't receive a salary because it is your own business. This sounds like a rip-off to me. What do you think? Have you heard from this company?
  4. I recentlly spent the day in ER (my DH had a car accident). I was in shock when he called and told me what happened and that he was on his way to the ER. I remembered thinking, he's Ok, I better take my books with me. I arrived in ER with my book in tow. My own illness made me think I needed to check myself in ER also. He was fine, but needed to stay a few days. I have not been the same since. It was a wake-up call for me. I had neglected my health, stopped going to church, stopped visiting friends, stopped living. And now I sat in the ER with a nursing school book. I thought how low can you go, but there was a test on Monday. In order to get a decent grade, I knew I would have to go lower. Since then I have reprioritized my life. My grades are suffering, and it will take a miracle for me to pass with my new habits. Still, my health has improved dramatically. All in all, I think we have to realize that as noble a profession as nursing is, it is not worth our health and life.
  5. Our school is worse. You can only miss one day of clinical. In addition, you can only repeat one class a year. So if you fail two, you're out of the program. Even if you repeated the class it would take almost a year to get back in and then only if it has been less than 5 years since you took all your prereqs. I heard of one unfortuante individual that had to take some prereqs again and then reapply. That means it will take an additonal year just to reapply. I am dropping out of the program. My health is worth so much more to me. I want to be a nurse not a patient.
  6. The question becomes. Can a person become a nurse without first becomeing a patient? Well, I can certainly say that I can relate to my patients better.
  7. Wow. It is amazing. I guess I'm not alone. I think this may be my last semester. I may take a break and really rethink my career choice. Walmart is starting to look better and I have met so many ex-nurses that I'm starting to think that this career offers many benefits, but some of us pay with our health.
  8. I have seen my health decline since I started in the nursing program. Mostly BP problems that I have nerver had. An eye twitch problem that came and went. Now something that may be more serious. Understand I have always enjoyed perfect health. So now I am faced with a delimina. Nursing school seems to be killing me slowly. Reading about the stress response in school makes me see a connection. I was wondering, how many others are sick since starting nursing school? I am on my way to the doctor about my latest problem. My next stop is droping out of the program. I still want to be a nurse, but it seems I am moving in the direction of patient.
  9. I loved it. I didn't get nervous during my speech, only before. I prayed first, taped my speech and listened to it over and over. I had my entire speech with me (my teacher said this is not a good idea), but I had the words in large letters that I wanted to recall so it was sort of the outline method in that I did not memorize the speech. I felt comfortable knowing that if I forgot my speech, I had it in front of me. To not be nervous, I recalled something Debra Messenger said on Oprah. She gets nervous when she has to do a speech, but not when she is acting. I decided to pretend that I was an actress and my speech was a script. It worked. I gave my speech and everyone said I didn't seem nervous. I got an A for the class.
  10. Someone on this site gave me this computer version to make flash cards. It is excellent. It allows you to quiz yourself on a PC. You can also print the cards or a study sheet. It's free. http://www.wadeb.com/cuecard/
  11. I purchased books on reading comprehension. Here is a list of possiblities" 1) Read Better, Remember More 2) Reading Comprehension Success in 20 Minutes a Day 3) 501 Reading Comprehension Questions These books are excellent. I purchased mine on Amazon. I did not buy the read better book, but it sounds good also. The books teach you the method of active reading. I studied these books before taking the test. I also took daily reading test offered free on the internet. One tip, remember to get plenty of rest before the test and eat. The brain needs glucose. Also try not to be nervous. Take the bible with you on test day and put all your trust in God.
  12. I only make cards that are informative since I started the actual nursing classes. In other words, lab values and normal vital signs. During the prereq phase, I made flash cards that were similar to lecture notes, only fill in the blank. I would take an entire sentence from the book. I also created a few true or false cards. This worked for me and I got an A in all my prereqs.
  13. I will pray for you. Please turn to God with your burden. He is there for you and can help you.
