Title says it all . Second semester baby nurse in clinicals at a major hospital.
Patients = Awesome
Most Nurses = Very sweet and helpful
Some nurses are rude, terse, horrible with patients, horrible with students and horrible with each other.
To those nurses I say this, please retire.
Its only a matter of time before management figures out they can live without you and hire some very hungry and very competent new grads that want to be there to fill your dusty shoes....

sadly the vast majority of the time these happen to also be charge nurses....in charge of what? Misery?
Leslie leslie leslie, you are being a bit judgemental yes? I have been a member since 2009.....so let me give you a bit of my story....
In 2008 after labor day I left my management job with a large corporation and left a very large 6 figure salary behind because I could not deal with the incongruence between my personal values and the corporate values that I had to contend with.
I decided to become a nurse for my second career.
I began taking prereqs and joined all nurses in 2009.
To make a long story short, I got accepted into my local ADN program, then changed my mind and started working on Pharmacy prereqs....then on a lark I applied for an accelerated MSN program at Columbia University in NYC in their FNP track.
I went and began courses at Columbia, then during the first week I was not feeling well, had some blood work and was diagnosed with cancer.
Left Columbia and returned to Florida to fight my cancer with the support of my Family back in Florida. Took me a year to get to the point that I could go back to school.
Decided to take it slow and return to my original ADN school. Out of 600 possible points in the first semester I missed 11 and got shining marks in clinicals also....
So as you see I have faced and dealt with adversity.....so now you know a little bit, a very little bit about why I have been a member since 2009 and am still a second semester ADN student...

I do not care how I am treated...but when I see these creatures treating the patients badly, thats where I draw the line.....most of the patients in this hospital are indigent and are too scared to report their poor treatment......
i agree with you re pts being treated badly.
that is reportable.
but to witness "bitter dried up old nurses" is not accurate.
i've seen it from nsg assts, and other personnel.
i've reported it all.
but, as a caveat, there are nurses/assts who 'sound' abrasive...almost like they're yelling, but are actually very loving people.
be careful when you/we judge.

I have a degree in management and tons of management experience, as soon as possible it is my goal to become a nurse manager and guess what, It is going to my mission in life to bring customer service back to nursing care. Remember the customer? Yes, the one in the bed, yes, thats right, the patient.

A hospital is NOT.. i repeat... NOT a hotel.
Wake up folks....Your patients ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS....
Without you patients you will not have a job.
Patientes have choices in most cities and do not have to go to your hospital.....
I promise you the customer focused model is going to return....

but pts are not there to be catered to.
they are in hosp to get better...nothing more, nothing less.
it's administration that pushes the customer service model, treating us nurses like total **** with their blatant disregard for what we do.

Yeah its definitley a joke, nothing to see here, carry on.But seriously folks, like I said, most nurse I have met are absolutely awesome, but a few have no business calling themselves a Registered Nurse....
I do have a lot to learn, and I love to learn. But when I get paired up with someone who obviously wants nothing to do with me, its tough.
The other day though a seasoned nurse called me over and said he was going to give me a dose of reality. He had me doing everything and he was awesome. I learned more in that 12 hour shift than I learned in 1.5 semesters of nursing school.........
So please dont get me wrong folks, most RN's are awesome, this post was directed at the very few that truly do need to step aside.....
Thats some awfully big judgements for 1.5 semesters of Nursing School!! They should go ahead and hand you your license because it looks to me like you have everything under control!
OP, I dont know what hospital you've worked at, but at my hospital, its a whole different ball game. I get treated like a freaking waitress all night. Ice, juice, water, snacks, soda, bring me this, hand me that, move this, where's the remote, scratch my foot, mix up my chicken broth, put sugar in my coffee, fluff my pillow, dont come in my room tonight, let me sleep.... And if i dont do exactly what they say, I'll be reported to the team lead so fast my head will spin. Too scared to report the way they were treated... HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
The whole customer service crap is the reason for that. I barely get to focus on my actual nursing duties all night b/c people treat the hospital like it's the Sandals Beach Resort and Spa.
They are in the hospital to recieve treatment, not to be serviced
as soon as possible it is my goal to become a nurse manager and guess what, It is going to my mission in life to bring customer service back to nursing care. Remember the customer? Yes, the one in the bed, yes, thats right, the patient.
My first reaction, mindlor, is to get defensive. I am fairly new out of the starting gate, but I learned early on to align myself with those crusty old nurses. They know the tricks! You'd be amazed how much they can teach you. Keep an open mind and positive attitude. Kill them with kindness. Show an interest in them. Nursing is much more than what you learn in school. The majority of nursing is on the job training, and what better person to learn from than someone who has made a lifelong career out of it!?
Also, the best managers are the nurses who can identify with their staff. This means they have put their time in the trenches and is perhaps a crusty nurse themself. I advise you to be prepared to put in your time before aiming for a management position.
I would like to hope that it was your nerves from studying speaking, but by posting threads like this, you are not converting the crusty nurses into iconic angels. In fact, you are adding on an additional layer of crust!

I have met bad nurses/good nurse the same with bad cashiers/good cashiers patients do have a choice however you have never been a nurse, so it would be wise to see what is really going on was this mandatory OT or a PMS day assess before you judge dont paint all of us with the same brush
