I am wondering, for all of those who have taken A&P I, who has taken it online and who took it in the classroom? And what were the pros and cons of both??
I am trying to decide which route to go and just wanted to get feedback from others who have done both.
thank you!!!
Kathy :)
I can honestly say you will need to do more than only 4 hrs a week of studying to make it. Liek I said, I got a 99% for my final grade in Human bio and I did not even have to try at all. I spent about 1 hour maybe 1.5 hr in study time for taht class and yet A&P id a killer for me. But all i can say is you'll see what works for you. Just a little of my 2 cents. hope it helps.
Thanks for the additional info. Believe me, I wasn't deluding myself that A&P would be as easy as Human Bio has been for me. I'm prepared to spend as much as 15-20 hours/week studying for it. But I'll also be taking Fundamentals of Nursing at the same time, and at some point you just have to budget your time in other areas, and if it means losing my 4.0 and settling for a B or C in that class, so be it. Since I won't be taking it through my home school, it won't count towards my GPA, anyway.
for anyone taking Human Bio and have not taken A&P yet, please understand that A&P is sooo very different than Human Bio. They are nothing alike and A&P is so much harder.
Not true at my school. Human Bio was very tough, just as tough as A and P. Many people flunked out of it. This Human Bio course was designed to cover much of the same material to help prepare you for the other courses (and, quite frankly, to help the school weed out people who aren't cut out for nursing.) It even helped me with Micro, since it covered some of that material too.
So, I think it also depends upon the individual school and how they design the course work.
80 hours a week STUDYING? For ONE 4-credit class? I'm sorry, that's just ridiculous.
It's even more ridiculous to believe such a claim. Just like people love to claim they work 80 hour weeks. People always exaggerate these numbers so they can say, "See how hard I work?" It's usually BS.
Quite frankly, I have no idea how many hours a week I study. I mean, does anybody really keep a precise count? I don't.

I'm with you. Sounds like this person has to "out-do" everyone else. I know people studying to become doctors that don't put in 80 hours a week studying. Next this person will be saying they're the Pope.......
Just do the math...80hrs/wk = 11.4something hrs./day PLUS school, driving, studying for other(!) classes...? yeah, right...
:rotfl:
It's the quality of study time--not quantity. I have plenty of ppl. in my class, who after failing a test ( including the simple stuff), cry "but I studied!"
imho :uhoh21:
I'm taking A&P I now. It takes me about 3 hours per chapter to write down the vocabulary, then the hours of review. The lab portion doesn't take me as long since I do alot of reviewing in class. I'd say about 8 hours a week and I am getting a solid A. I have to say it would be terribly difficult without lecture though. Having things put in laymans helps ALOT.
I took A&P I & II and the labs online. I know it sounds wacky but I thought they were really good and I learned a lot. They were challenging and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't very self-directed and motivated. I got A's but it took a lot of work and I'm sort of glad now because nursing students really need to know anatomy and physiology obviously.
They were simply not available to me when I needed them, plus I had a new baby at home so it helped me a lot. I wouldn't be in the BSN program this year if I hadn't done it that way. Mine was through St. Petersburg College in Florida, the teachers also taught in real life A&P classes and I think the online versions were structured as much the same as possible. For lab we used a bunch of pictures of slides, a physioEx lab simulations CD-ROM, and more. I had to take the midterm and finals with a proctor (we could go to St. Pete College to do it or if you lived far away like me you could arrange it at the testing center at your local college, which I did.)
As a matter of fact, you can look at some of the material for my A&P II here:
http://www.spjc.cc.fl.us/SPG/Science/Lancraft/BSC1086/index.htm
You can see the slides, "lecture notes", etc.
I'm taking A&P I in class now, and eventhough I usually do very well with online classes, I can not even imagine doing A&P online! I love sitting in the lab, bones etc. all around me and able to "touch" stuff. Also, smart people--the ones I stick to like glue--can really help you out. we usually "drill" eachother in class, especially before a test. I got a 98% average with only the final left, so I can only advice you to take it "live".
Where are you taking A&P. I'm also in NC. I'm taking a 6 week course of A&P1 at Meredith in the summer because I couldn't get into the community colleges. I'm a little worried, everyone I speak to says its hard.
Just like people love to claim they work 80 hour weeks.
I know at my husband's employer a 'normal' week is 50 hours. 60 if things are busy. If the plane is late, the whole crew goes to mandatory 6 12-hour shifts per week. That's 72 hours per week, but they only do it when there's a really bad crunch to get the plane launched on time.

maybe my school is more competitive or something but I can honestly say I put in a minimum of 40-50hrs a week and that one girl who is getting an A only told everyone how many she spent bc she got a 100% on the last exam and she said she spent 80hrs that week studying for A&P. really with all the wrok I get every week for this class I start to study and I start to do my homework and stuff and the time just goes. after a couple hours and you only have 2 questions for the guidelines answered you don't wonder anymore how you could even find enough to do in 40 hours. I study in 30 minute intervals. I study for 30 and then take 30 off and study for 30 and take 30 off and so on.
