big storm is coming

Published

and I'm already anticipating a strong possibility of being snowed in tomorrow when I'm to work at my LTC facility 3-11.

I'm feeling very torn. I should go somewhere when I can have access to roads. However, I'll be alone tonight - my daughter's going to be gone with friends for a football party and has plans to stay over - and I can't leave my dogs alone for 24+ hours! With the 12 inches or more snow predicted (and it's starting now), I'm thinking that it's gonna be a long, hard piece of work to digout tomorrow by myself. The snow's not supposed to stop until evening tomorrow with blizzard conditions during the day.

I've called in once because of snow in the 9 1/2 years I've worked at the facility, I've always had someone at home to watch the dogs. But I think I may not be there tomorrow. It's hard when the kids grow up and leave home, then you're responsible for everything!! :chuckle

But just the thought of calling in makes me feel bad - it's always so hard when there's a storm.

Dang it!

The snow is so beautiful. It ought to be rather amazing here by morning. A foot of snow on top of the 14 inches from last week - It'll be gorgeous. I may have to load up the film in my Pentax and go take some pictures.

Cindy

I bet it will be. I truly DO love the snow, but I like YOUR kind.. the kind that stays on the ground... then more falls on top... and you actually get to ENJOY it. Especially away from the city and slush or brown stuff. There's nothing like looking out your window to a snowcovered field or trees, beautiful nature all around, covered in white... little critter tracks here and there... so serene and peaceful.

But when it just lasts a day or two like here, then rain and ice and sleet... and brown patches of mostly melted slush... nah !

Forget it. If it can't be a REAL winter, than I'd just as soon it be spring... NOW! :D

There's nothing more beautiful than an untouched freshly fallen snow! I tried to post a pic of one, but this site won't let me! :bluecry1:

I honestly don't know how you folks in the Midwest stand it. I grew up in North Carolina, and lived in Chicago for 5 years, and the winters half drove me crazy. (My wife would argue that it was more than half ... ;-) I loved the city itself, but was considerably less in love from November to March.

Here in NC, a 1 inch snowstorm shuts down the schools. There was a 5 inch storm here last Sunday, and the schools were shut for 4 1/2 days. If there's even a HINT of snow in the weather forecast, the grocery stores will be packed with people stocking up on milk, bread, etc., because they might be "snowed in" for a day or so. ("Snowed in" means a few roads had to be plowed). A lot of folks have moved to this area from NY, NJ, and other northeastern areas, and I can always tell if it's their first winter here: it's the look on their faces when they see the natives' reaction to cold and ice.

I hear you! Where I grew up in NC it was the same. Back then there was no such a thing as a "snow plow". What's a snow plow? :)

Cindy, dear you just reminded me why I left Iowa. The fun I had - running outside to start the car so it would be warmed up by the time I was ready to leave for work. The car was generally warmed up enough by the time I got the driveway shoveled so I could get the car out of the driveway into the street which hopefully had all ready been plowed by then. Let's not forget scraping the ice off the windshield so I could see to get to work. Oh yah and then scraping it off again after work so I could see to get home. There's no feeling in the world like having to start engaging the break pedal because you see a stop sign a block away. I could go on and on. The fun never ended! Honestly though the older I get and the longer I've been away the more I miss Iowa. It was a great place to grow up as a kid. If indeed I ever have any children, I'd like for them to grow up there too. It truly is a simpler life. If there happen to be any young ladies out there willing to help me out with that please drop me a line.

Tweety, my friend you must be old as dirt. They actually have this new fangled piece of equipment now days. I've never actually seen one for myself - some say they call it a snow blower. :rotfl:

I grew up mostly in Greensboro, NC and until recently, they did not have snow plows. SO any snow at all just SAT on the road, causing major traffic problems for southerners who THOUGHT that they knew how to drive in snow. Recently, they have bought snow plows, but engage in "selective plowing" as I like to call it. They plow only parts of roads, not the whole thing, and it is still quite treacherous in the mornings and evenings. So Tweety, I can relate to not knowing what a snow plow is, and I'm in my twenties. You're not "old as dirt" as someone said!!!

We, too, were shut down here in southern virginia because of the snow last week. The county schools were out all week, and the city went on a 2 hour delay on friday. We're supposed to get more snow this week, and I certainly HOPE we don't, or my vacation might be called off!!!

Just spoke to daughter, no rain or snow expected as of yet in her part of NC. I am ignoring forecast until pm tomorrow.

Went out to get paper this am and looked at creek, 3 inches of solid ice, bank to bank. It is cold here and staying that way.

Hey IowaCindy - I'm just across the river from ya' in Husker country. Howdy neighbor!

We had 14" last weekend - another 7" so far today and another 7" coming overnight. I'm also dreading the commute -- my FIRST day of work tomorrow as a new grad. Sigh...30 minute drive in good weather...I better plan on a good hour or two to make it in safely.

To you NC folks, my dream is to come live out on your beaches someday!! The older I get, the less tolerant of cold I get.

Aren't you just sick of this weather? These last two weeks have been awful esp for Southern Iowa. Hopefully this new storm will miss us, but I doubt it. Drive carefull and stay warm!
