big bad nursing myths busted

In the name of nursing week I will defend our profession. I'm not trying to stir up controversy, but lets admit nurses perpetuate myths about their own profession and injure nursing's rep way more than everyone else can. Ever heard any good ones?

For example:

Geriatric nursing is only for untalented nurses and ones gearing down for their retirement.:trout:

Specializes in cardiac.
How about that Diploma nurses aren't really nurses because we didn't go to college and get a degree...we are just vocational tech nurses. This was said to me by a nurse who obtained a degree.[/quote']

I hope you told her to blow it out her butt!!!LOL!!!! No.. just joking. Wouldn't be very professional, now would it? The nerve of such small minded people just amazes me. LOL!!!:lol2:

Had a hairdresser ask me once, "so you nurses just keep an eye on the patients while the doctors is at his office, until they can come in an take care of them right?" Her haircut stunk too.

All nurses do is empty bedpans and wipe butts.

in case anyone reading these believes what you read about LTC nurses, it is totally false. our acuity level is so much higher now than it ever has been.

BTW, one of my residents recently told his daughter that this "hotel" is very nice here...they even WIPE YOUR BUTT FOR YOU!!!:lol2: :lol2:

1. I like the part where "nurses eat their young".. the younger, the better... especially if dipped in wasabi or hot sauce....hmm yummy! makes my nose run..:roll :chuckle

2. Oncology and ICU wards are the "Gateways to Heaven" and the nurses

cna't eat anymore young, am on a diet and i have to be trim in order to reinforce dietary instructions that the dietitian breezed through and left them some printouts

there are a few bad eggs that perpetuate the myths..and people remember a bad nurse, sales clerk, doc, lawyer etc and forget the hardworking people have stepped up to the plate and done their job

nurses do have a tendancy to believe that the path they took after graduation is the best for all others just human i guess

most nurses do their best at a rough job and they deserve all the pats on the back and a paycheck that reflects the work that they do every day and the money/effort that went into their education
