big bad nursing myths busted

In the name of nursing week I will defend our profession. I'm not trying to stir up controversy, but lets admit nurses perpetuate myths about their own profession and injure nursing's rep way more than everyone else can. Ever heard any good ones?

For example:

Geriatric nursing is only for untalented nurses and ones gearing down for their retirement.:trout:

These are a few I have heard recently,

"Nursing isn't hard"

"healthcare costs are so high because nurses make too much money"

"There isn't a nursing shortage"

YEAH RIGHT!!!!

OB is a "cakewalk".

Anybody can teach.

RN stands for "Real Nurse" and LPN stands for "Lets Play Nurse":madface: I hate that one.

OB nurses aren't real nurses because they don't do anything but play with babies. (Hello, when something goes wrong on OB, it REALLY goes wrong, thankyouverymuch!)

Medical assistants can do anything nurses can do.

A lot of nurses are in it for the money.

All the trouble nursing is having? It's because they're lazy. Nursing isn't the way it was when I was at the bedside. I had 30 patients and it was fine.

Why do you want to be a nurse? All they do is stand there and take orders, like on Grey's Anatomy. You are better than that! :angryfire

All the young I work with run to fast... damn I'm starving!

1. The night shift is the easiest because all the patients are asleep.

2. Oncology is where all the deaths occur.

3. As nurses, we are doing are jobs simply for the care of humanity and we need no money...(I have heard something like that before WHAT BS!!!)

All ER nurses are mean, tough, and jaded.

Sadly, Thats not to far from the truth either. The ED at my hospital does not srive for customer service:uhoh3:

* Males get into nursing because they couldn't hack med school

* Males in nursing are gay

* We need more "male" nurses (Why can't we just have more "nurses", period? )

* Nurses eat their young

* All nurses do is take BPs and pass pills

* ICU/CCU/ER nurses are uppity, mean and cliquish

* Med-Surg nurses are "waitresses". Med-Surg nurses lack ambition and drive, else they would have left the bedside years ago.

* Floor nursing is "easy". (I doubt any department of nursing is "easy")

Just some of my observations as a "n00bie" nurse :)

BN nurses are better at the bedside.

Night shift is for lazy, dangerous nurses.

New grads are stupid, think they know it all, etc. etc.

Psych nurses are lazy (although I have to agree that some do start to act like their patients)

You need med/surg experience to be a good nurse.

LTC nursing isn't "really nursing".

ICU, ER and OR are the "elite" and should be worshipped and admired.

I can't add Nurses eat their young, because I think they do.

My favorite is "nursing isn't hard" or "ADN nursing school is easy"

A side note, I love the psych nurses! I am NOT a psych person. You are REAL nurses. lol

Nurses make a lot of money and have great health insurance.

Nurses never get sick.

That is so humorous. Here I am nursing a cold for the third time! :)

How about, that Diploma nurses aren't really nurses because we didn't go to college and get a degree...we are just vocational tech nurses. This was said to me by a nurse who obtained a degree.
