Best Response

Hi guys. I took my test on Wednesday and still waiting for my results. Meanwhile I have been reviewing some practice questions and came across this one...what would YOU say the best response is?

Im confused about the right answer!!!!

A woman comes into the ED with a bruised eye, cigarette burns over her arms and multiple abrasions to her body. She is crying and states that if only she didnt upset her husband she would not have been in this situation. She states her husband is a good guy and she just wants to hurry up and go back home after treatment.

A) "This is not your fault. It was good idea for you to come here"

B) "We can talk about your discharge after you get treated"

C) "What kind of things upset your husband?"

D) "Arent you afraid he will do this again?"

I would love to get some feedback on this please!!!! Thanks guys in advance.

The best reponse for me would be A bcuz she needs to get help and A is more therapeutic. The other responses are pretty much supporting the abuse she's getting from her husband.

I would say B. After all she just might be a hysterical self harmer!

i would answer C because it identify cause of anger..and its a open question...hope this right..

i'd say B. she has injuries that, although they might not seem serious, becomes priority. During treatment and at the same time assessment of the injuries, the nurse might begin to gauge what might have really caused them for all we know, there's still a probability the client's not being true. then, the discharge decisions will come from there.

I would choose "A". You have to address domestic violence immediately. The patient's safety and ER safety are at risk. So you would not wait until treatment of wounds to address domestic violence. It doesnt matter what things upset her husband as it is not about him. The last question really isnt that therapeutic or supportive.

The first question is non judgemental and also supports the patient's decision to seek help or treatment.

I would've chose A b/c it brings her back to reality by saying "This is not your fault". And lets her know that she made a good decision in coming in. Therapeutic.

I would have chosen B. It has been a while since I did NCLEX questions, but to me it seems that the priority would be to treat her and keep her there before she changes her mind or her husband shows up. So what is the correct answer?

A.

Part of the cycle of domestic violence is the victim's belief that if only she could behave herself things would be better.

Wow, thanks for all the responses guys!

I chose "A" but the correct answer seems to have been "B"????

I also had a domestic violence question on my exam on Wednesday and was wondering if the answer I chose was therapeutic enough.

We are all split between A and B. My thought on "B" as the correct answer is that it does NOT address her immediate need...which is feeling like its "her fault".

i think if you go by the maslows heirarchy, her physical needs are the priority over her emotional needs.
