Best Mattress for Heavy Soon-2-B Nurse?

Published

I need some advice here! My husband and I just bought a Temperpedic Mattress and are experiencing lower back pain from it! I have a BMI of 40 (yes I know I am very un-healthy but I am working on it!) and my husband is only 130 lbs! Needless to say we are having some issues here! lol!

There is not much research out there regarding what is the best type of bed for 2 people with such different weights! We had a "normal" bed up to about 2 weeks ago - but it had to get thrown out because my massive weight basically killed it!

I need some nurses advice here! I am not sleeping well and it is effecting my school performance! What are you sleeping on? Good? Bad? I need some feedback! Thank you!!! :) You all basically rock!

Serta! Love it! After buying the mattress 4 years ago it's still the same today as when I bought it! I always sleep like a rock on my Serta! It's not too soft or not too firm. I'm a big girl too (BMI 32) and the mattress is so comfortable.

My Sleep Number bed has been a godsend! I can adjust it as my weight changes, or just whenever I feel like it.....I rarely wake up with back pain anymore, and I've had a bad back since I was in my early teens and 115 lbs. dripping wet. Even better, it has dual controls so my dh can adjust his side the way HE wants. Spendy, yes, but worth every single penny!

I would suggest a Sleep Number bed. The best thing about it is that it's ajustable from firm to soft and each side is on a seperate control so you and your husband can customize it for yourselves. Also with a regular mattress you are stuck with it. With the sleep number you can try different settings until you find the one that will work for you

Hi, I'm not a nurse but I'd like to recommend a bed that's relatively unknown. My husband and I bought it because my in-laws have it so we got to try it for a whole summer, I can't be more sincere when I say I LOVE MY BED, it so comfortable. It is especially built for hospitals and people that need to spend lots of time in bed. Anyway it's an amazing bed, and worth every penny, we got a king an paid about 2000 for it.The website is the following http://www.satbed.com/index.php. Check out the video it explains the technology behind it better than I can.

Good luck on your search.

I'd recommend buying 2 twin or full beds and put them together. Therefore you can each have a preference and if you "kill" another bed you'll only have to replace 1/2 the cost.

yup, two twins, and they sell (at least use to, anyway) a "filler" strip to fill in the space between the mattresses. This gives you the width of a king, but not the length......good luck

We have a Sleep Number bed and it is AWESOME!!! My fiance is 300+lbs, and I am, well... not telling... (lol), but it works perfectly for both of us. He sleeps with his side very firm (75-85), and I'm kind of in the middle (50-60). It is pricey, but worth the money.

The other idea that a pp has mentioned would work too (the two twin/full beds stuck together).

Good luck!

How long have you had the tempurpedic? Mine took several weeks to "break in" and until it did it felt like concrete. Now, however, I would not change it for the world! Interestingly, I cannot sleep on my hubby's side nor he on mine, because the mattress has adjusted to each of us perfectly. If they give you 30 days to sleep in it before you return it, I would suggest giving it that time to break in. It may be worth the sufferring in the meantime.

I have a Sealy TrueForm it feels like I'm sleeping on a cloud. Worth every penny!

I can't sleep on anything, but my tempur-pedic. and before that we had a sleep number bed that caused me so much back pain I was ready to set the thing on fire in the yard. It takes awhile for the tempur material to break in, like the previous poster mentioned. I'm not sure what your return policy is, but they usually have 30-90 days to try out, and I would try to keep as long as possible to give you time to adjust to it. Also, if you did not buy the Tempur-pedic brand, but a knock off, they are not the same, the material is different and you won't have the same support as true tempur material.

Thanks for the replies! I think we are going to stick with the Tempurpedic for now! I have found that if I sleep on my side only I don't hurt in the mornings. Pretty inconvenient, but at my weight I have no idea if the bed is the problems or my big belly :)

I wanted to switch to an air mattress, but where we bought the bed from doesn't carry the product - so we couldn't do a refund/swap. Thank you again for the feedback! :)
