Ordinarily, I am an easygoing, laid back type person. However, there are two women, mother and daughter, that I am ready to KILL!! :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire
About 2 weeks ago, I caught a cold from my kiddos. I was coughing in class, as you might expect. I didn't have a fever.
I tape every lecture, so I KNOW how I sounded on the tape. I got choked on spit and of course, couldn't breathe. I was absolutely embarrassed. :imbar Then for the Renal test last Monday, I had another coughing fit. Tears rolled out of my eyes.
Friday, the daughter brought in a basket of cough drops. Set them on the table right in front of me!! :angryfire :angryfire She said that they were for anyone who wanted them, whether we needed them or not. Then she said "Please take them, the coughing is getting really annoying."
Everyone in the room KNEW she was talking about me. I chose to ignore her. I did NOT take any of the cough drops because I didn't need them.
Today, the girl who sits behind me was coughing, so the mother got up and handed her 3 cough drops. Then she turned back around and tried to hand me some. I handed them right back and said I didn't need them. She asked me to PROMISE that I wouldn't cough while we were taking the test!! :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire Of course I told her that I wasn't going to promise anything, but that I didn't want the cough drops.
Needless to say, I was upset. I took the Cardiac test and got 39/59 which is a 78%. We need an 80% to pass the course. I am so tired of this woman!
2 weeks ago, in clinical, she did the accu check on my patient. No big deal, I had done one, she hadn't. I went to meet the others in our group in the cafeteria, and teasingly said that she did my accu check. Her daughter was sitting there. I didn't think anything about it. It didn't upset me. In fact, I completely forgot about it. I had so many other things to do, she didn't cross my mind. The next day, she came over and sat in the chair next to mine in lecture. She told me that "She had gotten her feelings hurt, by what I had said." I had no clue what she was talking about.
I apologized to her, all the time thinking "OMG you are 47 yrs old, GROW UP!!"" :angryfire :angryfire I have tried everything I can think of to get along with these two. I am at my wit's end. I have BOTH of them in lecture AND clinical, 4 days aweek!! I keep telling myself 3 more weeks and I won't have to deal with them ever again.
I CAN'T wait until Thanksgiving. I need a break from them. OH yeah, I forgot to mention, she got the job I applied for. A tutor for the freshman nurses. I REFUSE to go in there and ask her for help!!
Thanks for letting me vent!!

These two are student nurses?????? They need an attitude check don't they?
They are training to be health care professionals, yet they are giving you a hard time for coughing. Maybe next time they offer you another cough drop, you should offer them a gob stopper!!!
Don't let them get you down, or if it gets too much report them. You shouldn't have to put up with bullying.

Devil's advocate here, but I've been in classes before where I couldn't hear a word of lecture because somebody was coughing so loudly. It really IS aggravating, and so easily remedied by stepping outside.
Maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture, but I honestly don't see what either of them have done that's wrong??

In a true nursing environment, coughing is expected. Heck, that is probably why you are near that person in the first place.
But in an academic environment, ANY noise distraction can be detrimental to focusing on a lecture or test. This includes loud stereos from cars in the parking lot, squeaky chairs that squeak each time the sitter even so much as takes a breath, excessive fidgeting (i.e. toe tapping, finger tapping, pen clicking, etc.) and even whispering between students during lecture.
As a conscientious student, if my coughing was frequent enough and loud enough that it was obviously a distraction/annoyance to my fellow students, I would take the necessary precautions to prevent it (cough drops, OTC meds, Rx, etc) or I would remove myself from the room temporarily. I don't know how bad the cough was for the original poster MOST of the time, but during the bad spells that he/she mentioned, leaving the room WOULD have been appropriate.
These two women, while their grievance seems to be understandable, their ability to communicate effectively and graciously seems to be greatly impaired. A direct request of the original poster to leave the room if that happened again, with much tact and compassion as possible, would probably have been a more effective method than implying it.
Besides, it is true (at least in my life experiences) that some folks just exude negativity and nastiness as this 1-2 combo of mother and daughter appear to be. So please don't take my post as an attack on the original poster as it is not intended to be. Her feelings of being slighted are probably right on the money. Most people know when they are being "attacked" regardless of method and that appears, from her side of the situation, to be the case.
So, in summary, I say that during class, keeping it quiet is an unwritten rule that SHOULD be written. Students that don't "complain" may be just as affected as those that do and so equal consideration for all students must be used.

This opinion in no way excuses rude and inconsiderant retaliatory behavior as that simply serves to worsen the classroom environment.

Huh?? Why? What did I miss?
I am looking at this from a totally different aspect than you are I know, but maybe she was trying to offer you a cough drop because you had been coughing. Maybe that is all there was to it, and yes maybe she forgot WHEN you had been coughing.
With the hurt feeling thing, maybe her feelings were hurt because you said she was doing your b/s check. Some peoples feelings are easily hurt.
Her getting a 100 on test has nothing to do with you.
And you don't have to listen to her stories if you don't want to, walk away.
I didn't mean to offend you by my comments, only point out that there is always 2 sides to every story, and maybe you are reading her wrong.

**She is a 47 y/o grandmother. She needs to stop acting like a teenager!!
Her getting a 100 on test has nothing to do with you.
**Personally, I thought it was NEAT!! That's why I mentioned it.
And you don't have to listen to her stories if you don't want to, walk away.
**I can't walk away, she does it DURING lecture!! :angryfire

**Not offended at all. As a side note, I wanted to let you know that the daughter brought the basket in again. This time I took 5 because I started coughing. :rotfl:

I wouldn't even try to get along with her, she's proven that her company's not worth your time.
