Bed Bath Failure!!!

Published

 Hello everyone. I flunked out of my 1st 4 minutes into bed bath checkoff in lab. Not because I did not study or know my stuff, but due to nerves. If I do not get it the second time around, we get kicked out of the program. ANY ADVICE???

wow, take a deep breath and relax!! try practicing om someone at home then the next time at school, just imagine you are doing a bedbath on a loved one. hope it turns out good:wink2:

What happened that you failed? Take deep breaths before so you can get your head clear and remember your steps. Talk to your patient throughout the weather is generally a good one. You know your stuff so dont be nervous. From your user name you sound like a mom and you would have had to wash your child too. Youve done it many times before but havent noticed it. Good luck!

practice, practice, practice. check offs are like doing a performance on stage. an actor wouldn't think of going on stage without having reheorificed and learned his/her lines until they could recite them in their sleep without even thinking twice.

Previous posters have all offered great advice. Nursing skills are all about practice. None of us was born knowing how to start an art line!

If it is any consolation, I was never able to make an occupied bed to suit my instructors.... and they were right. I have always worked in an ICU environment, so I just used the bedscale - jacked 'em up, made the bed & let 'em down. Needless to say, all my patients got daily weights :D

One of the most important things to remember in these instances is patient safety. As far as a bed bath, you want to think about things such as keeping side rails up, making sure pt is comfortable enough to breath well if rolled on his/her side, putting the bed back down to the lowest level when finished, water temperature, cleaning from cleanest areas to dirtiest areas, etc.

Good luck on your second try!

Have you tried talking through it? I have anxiety in front people doing skills too I just talk through them like I am talking to a patient not an instructor. Ok Mrs. so and so I am going to give you a bed bath now. Let me wash my hands first and we'll get started, I am going to raise the bed a bit so I can reach better, are you ok?, Ok mrs. so and so I going to start with your face, would you like to help?, ok I'll start with... kind of like that. You are so busy talking you forget you have someone watching. I just did that yesterday to get my CNA recert here in AZ. It helped!! Good luck!

Try writing it out as a script: I found that's helped me for more than a few skills...

Have a peer or two practice with you. You will get used to having an audience (I know it isn't the same as having those scary instructors standing over you:imbar, but it will help) and if you talk yourself through it as you go, you are less likely to forget something. Also, if you are saying each step aloud as you go, your peers can coach you if you start to leave something out. Good luck!!:loveya:

i had no idea you could fail a bedbath?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I am sorry to hear about your failure. I know that checkoffs can be so intimidating. Even after I had practiced and practiced, I still felt so nervous. Before you go in the room, just take a deep breath and visualize yourself passing. You can do this!
