Becoming an NP after discipline

Published

Hi everyone,

so I was reprimanded with restrictions and served my time. I have been clean and licensed and working for over a year now. I'm currently applying at NP schools and was asked about my disciplinary history. Sigh. I'll be honest, I have to. But, has anyone else had experience getting into NP school with a history? Also, if accepted and if able to finish, what about getting credentialed and insured? I haven't been able to get insurance as an RN due to my disciplinary history. Sigh. Any insights will be much appreciated.

Applying to NP school was difficult being in monitoring. Some schools (univ. south Alabama) wont admit those in monitoring while others (VA commonwealth U) have a list of convictions that exclude you. Basically violent crimes, touching children and anything to do with drugs. Evidently were of that ilk in many minds. I have started at walden. Its definitely not the program i wanted but its a means to an end. Easiest application ever. No essay, references, criminal conviction questions. Like i said i have my doubts about their program but evidently beggars, child rapists and us.... Cant be choosers.

There are others on here who have graduated from better schools as NPs. UConn to name one. Do a search and the thread will pop up.

Thank you for answering! I've completed monitoring so that's one less hurdle. I'm clear now but it's always in my past. I have searched a couple times and nothing has popped up on here. I'll try again. I'd also like to know if anyone had any trouble with lcoensing, insurance, and credentialing after they finished school. How do you like walden?

I know for some schools they require you to get insurance. I have to pay for my own insurance. I would begin asking around to see if you can get insurance as a student NP.

Thanks for the advice! I just hope they will give me insurance. Does anyone know of an insurance company that will insure with a past disciplinary history?

My hospital provides up to a million in . So if you plan to practice as an NP in a hospital, you should be provided with something similar. I do know a few docs in recovery that had a helluva time getting insurance. But they had their own practices so it's a different situation. I don't think it will be a game stopper for you.

It will not. Think if every physician who is in monitoring, they all carry insurance.

Thank you guys

Any updates on this topic? I am interested in this as well... I finish my monitoring in less than a year and once I'm completed I'd like to go back to school for NP but not if its going to be worthless.

I M at the intake phase of my program, but I know that I want to go back to school. I currently hold an ADN, but depending on how this is all going to affect me in the long run, I would like to either get my masters to teach or to go back for to become an NP... can u apply to a program while in the monitoring phase and aRe their schools that will accept me?

What ended up happening for you? I'm at this same point right now.
